Summer fieldwork continues to be highly varied. This week included a public safety survey involving gulls and an international airport. This image was a particular highlight, demonstrating just how adaptable gulls are when it comes to nesting in urban environments.

This series of images offers a small taster of the variety of species we've been fortunate enough to record in the field in the last three months.

These species were captured during both traditional terrestrial surveys and drone surveys. From open grasslands to woodland to the open sea, the UK's wildlife is diverse.

Changing the thermal colour palette can make a significant difference when surveying deer in different conditions.

In this example, featuring a large deer group in England, the footage begins using a high-definition white hot palette before switching to iron hot. Adjusting the sensitivity of the gain mode is also an effective way to maximise detection and improve visibility across varying terrain and temperatures.

These white-faced deer have a fascinating history, as explored in the latest ADMG article by Victor Clements. It was great to see this event come to fruition after coming across this unique red deer genetic trait in Germany last year when surveying near Hamburg.

A big thanks to Walter Manhert, Dr John Fletcher and Donnie Broad for their informative and engaging talks throughout the evening. It’s been fascinating learning more about the history and origins of these unique deer, and how their story connects Scotland and Germany through this genetic trait.

Last week, we completed another landscape scale deer and goat census utilising boat, ATVs, vehicles and on foot. The Glenelg DMG at roughly 40,000 hectares along with another significant area further south on the Knoydart Peninsula kept the team busy. It’s was a real highlight at the end of the season as the deer census work naturally quietens down for the summer. It has to be one of the most spectacular surveys with regards to scenery we have had the pleasure of working on within the UK plus, the weather was on our side.

A huge thank you to everyone who accommodated us and helped shuttle us around by boat and across the hills throughout the project - we really enjoyed working with you all.

Strange faint thermal signature!

The daylight camera however reveals a pod of common dolphin off the west coast of Scotland. You would be mistaken to think that this imagery is from a more exotic part of the world but the weather in Scotland recently has been fantastic for gathering footage during bird surveys.

During one of our regular surveys in areas where boar are present, we captured this rare footage of a sow with her newborn piglets in a remote part of Scotland.

The sow can be seen carefully guiding her four piglets across hilly terrain showing attentive maternal behaviour in the wild.

From our data this year, sows we have recorded are giving birth between January and April although in the past we have picked up litters at other times of the year. The piglets in this clip, based on their size and markings, are likely only a few days old.

We’re also continuing to see the boar population expand its range, with new locations being recorded more frequently during our surveys.

Cave Stag Update:

He's been back a number of times since the last post. Last week he was seen without his antlers but this clip shows him in March before losing them. He even came over and gave one of the cameras a sniff. In a future post we will show the other species utilising this cave - the primary other visitor is a large adult otter.

Last week we undertook red deer and goat surveys in Ireland which have some of the largest blanket bogs in Europe. The colours and contrasts from the air were spectacular.
