WE'RE HIRING: Geneticist | Black Soldier Fly Genetics 📢

Location: Easter Bush Campus, near Edinburgh

Due to our continued development, Beta Bugs is looking for a Geneticist to help lead the genetic development of our Black Soldier Fly (BSF) strains and contribute to the development of a world-class commercial insect breeding programme. This is an opportunity to apply quantitative genetics and animal breeding in one of the most exciting emerging areas of sustainable agriculture.

You’ll take responsibility for driving genetic progress in commercially important traits, from breeding programme design and trait measurement through to data analysis, genetic evaluation and selection. You’ll also work on R&D projects aimed at developing better methods for measuring traits and accelerating genetic improvement.

Working closely with our CEO, Programme Manager, R&D Manager and technical team, you’ll have the opportunity to influence both the scientific direction and commercial impact of our breeding programme.

We’re looking for someone with:
🧬 MSc or PhD in Animal Breeding & Genetics or a closely related discipline
🧬 Strong understanding of quantitative genetics and genetic evaluation
🧬 Experience or understanding of commercial breeding programmes
🧬 Strong data analysis skills
🧬 Programming capability in R or Python
🧬 Excellent communication and collaborative working skills
🧬 An interest in applying genetics to a new and rapidly developing agricultural sector

Two technologies. One high-performance starting point 🧬⚙️

The Beta Bugs and FreezeM partnership aims to bring high-performance Black Soldier Fly genetics to commercial producers across Europe.

By combining HiPer-Fly® genetics with FreezeM’s PauseM® suspended neonate technology, we’re working towards a more consistent, reliable and scalable biological input for commercial BSF production 🥚🪰❄️

With around 50 generations of pedigree breeding behind HiPer-Fly®, and FreezeM’s technology enabling the production and distribution of standardised suspended neonates, the partnership brings together two complementary technologies with a shared goal: Helping commercial insect producers unlock greater productivity, consistency and yield.

Controlled and commercial trials are fully underway, with full commercialisation planned for 2027.

Our CEO, Dr Alan Tinch is joining the panel at the Scottish Sustainable Agriculture Conference with the Soil Association at Guardswell Farm in Perth today! 🐖🌽🐔

Bringing together farmers, crofters and experts from across Scottish agriculture, the conference is exploring practical approaches to sustainable farming, agroecology and building more resilient farming systems.

Alan will be sharing his perspective on the role that BSF genetics and insect farming could play within future agricultural systems, including opportunities around nutrient cycling, alternative protein production and making better use of organic resources. A great opportunity to share ideas, learn from farmers and explore how different approaches can contribute to the future of agriculture.

Beta Bugs × FreezeM | Combining genetics and technology to advance BSF production 🧬🪰🏭

We’re delighted to announce a new collaboration between Beta Bugs and FreezeM, bringing together Beta Bugs’ HiPer-Fly® selectively bred BSF genetics with FreezeM’s innovative PauseM® technology! 🙌🏻

The partnership will see a population of HiPer-Fly® established at FreezeM’s facility in Germany, where the companies will work together on both controlled and commercial trials 🤝

The aim is to explore how the combination of high-performance genetics and an optimised neonate environment can support:

Insects to Feed the World 2026 brought together the global insect farming community to explore the innovations, technologies, and partnerships shaping the future of sustainable protein production 🪰🌍

From Black Soldier Fly farming and genetics to waste valorisation, feed innovation, automation, and industry scale-up, the event highlighted just how rapidly the sector is evolving 👏

It was fantastic to connect with producers, researchers, technology providers, and industry stakeholders from around the world, all working towards a more sustainable and circular food system. The event provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the growing role of genetics in delivering predictable, scalable, and commercially viable BSF production.
