đ Unexpected Marketing Lesson from The Crown đ
Have any of you watched the Netflix Series âThe Crownâ? Iâll be honest, when the first series came out (2016 đ˛) I felt that it wasnât really something I would be interested in â not my cup of tea you might say. Well it must have been pretty popular as Netflix, not known for sticking with something if it doesnât find and audience right away, recently released series number 4.
So anyway, Mrs H started watching it and is hooked, and as is often the way of things I have been roped into watching it too đ ⌠and I have to say, itâs actually pretty interesting. And no, this isnât intended to be an advert for The Crown, but itâs worth a look if youâve not yet seen it.
No, the reason for this post is because last night there was a scene in which Lord Altrincham was being interviewed by Robin Day as he had been critical of the Queen and some things were said that have huge implications in both your business and the marketing of your business (ANY business for that matter!).
In the part of the interview at the start of this clip Lord Altrincham acknowledges the difficulties the queen has in connecting with her audience (sound familiar yet?). There are a couple of brilliant quotes during the interviewâŚ
âItâs not superhuman to be a little bit spontaneousâ
âIn her speeches she should be more naturalâ
âordinary doesnât have to mean bland, or ineffectual, or forgettableâ
These are really key things that you should think about with any piece of marketing that you put out there to try and connect with your audience. If you put out bland, boring, ineffectual and forgettable marketing then at the very best it wonât be as effective as it could be, and could end up simple being a waste of your time, effort and money.
The next part of the clip is also interesting because Robin Day goes on to ask who is to blame for these problems and surprisingly the response gets to the very heart of what itâs like to run your own businessâŚ
âIf the court is wrong, if the setup is wrong, you have no choice but to blame the bossâ (Robin Day âthe Queen?â) âYes, because only the boss can get rid of the bad servantsâ
Now Iâm not suggesting you have servants (or even see your employees as such đ), but as the boss you are ultimately responsible for everything that happens in your business and if you want things to change itâs up to you to make them happen. Itâs the double edged sword⌠Good News â youâre your own boss⌠Bad News â youâre your own boss⌠Your business, your responsibility, no excuses.
Thereâs a closing statement thatâs worth thinking about to⌠Lord Altrincham says ââŚBritain has changed beyond recognition and yet the monarchy continues its pre-war routinesâ
Are you doing the same things you have always done? The same things you did 3-years ago?, 5-years ago? How much has your market, your customers changed and do you need to rethink how you speak to them, how you communicate with them?
Deep stuff indeed! I certainly wasnât expecting a 3-minute marketing and business ownership masterclass when I sat down to watch The Crown last night⌠but it certainly got me thinking đ¤
On that note, have a great weekend, relax, unwind and come back fighting fit and raring to go on Monday.
Power to your ELBOW đŞđ
Cheers,
Andy
