What’s the franchise community actually like? I was recently asked this on the BusinessesForSale.com Podcast

Honestly? It’s one of the most giving industries I’ve ever been part of. It genuinely feels like one big family right across the UK. Sectors collaborate, share ideas, lift each other up, home care, children’s activities, food, you name it.

People like me give away thousands of hours of free advice every year, not because we have to, but because we want to.

My advice? Talk to the people who are doing well, whether that’s franchisors, franchisees, or advisers, get as much real-world insight as you can before making any decision. Even if you decide franchising isn’t for you, you will have made an informed choice.

We are stronger together in franchising.

Today, on , we want to celebrate every single person who has chosen this model, not just the brand or the business, but the community that comes with it.

In franchising, no one has to figure it out alone. You get a proven system, a network of people who’ve walked the same path, and a team genuinely invested in your success, that’s rare, that’s powerful.

A huge thank you to for flying the flag here in the UK, championing ethical, inclusive franchising and making sure our sector has the voice and the platform it deserves. WDays like today don’t happen without the people behind the scenes making it matter.

To every franchisee, franchisor, and supporter out there, today is for you.

Drop a 🙌 if franchising has changed your story.

Having a successful business doesn’t automatically mean you are ready to franchise it.

You can have a thriving business, loyal customers, a growing reputation and still not be franchisable.

Why? Because if your business runs on you, your instincts, your talent, your relationships, it can’t be handed to someone else.

Here’s the acid test:

Can you write down exactly how you do what you do?

Can someone else follow that and get the same result, without you there?

If the knowledge is still in your head rather than in your systems, that’s your starting point, not a franchise agreement.

And proof of concept matters too, working once, in one location, isn’t enough, replication is the whole game.

A franchise isn’t just a successful business, it’s a successful business someone else can run.

Not ready yet? That’s the most valuable thing to know, because now you know exactly what to fix first.

I was recently asked on The BusinessesForSale.com Podcast: “What’s really stopping women from buying a franchise?”

As someone who’s hugely passionate about getting more women into business, here’s what we’re still seeing:

1. Confidence. “I can’t go it alone, I’ve got so much to juggle.” Sound familiar? You are not alone.

2. Skills gap. “I’ve never run a business before.” Here’s the truth, you don’t need to have. That’s literally what a franchise is built for.

3. Funding fear. With the cost of living so high, the question of “can I actually afford this?” feels real. But there’s bank funding support, mentoring, and a whole industry of people willing to help you make it work.

The answers are out there, the network is waiting and the only thing missing is you.

What’s the biggest thing holding you back from taking the leap into franchising?

The biggest mistake I see franchisors make? Treating the signed agreement as job done.

It’s not, that’s where the real work begins.

When a franchisee signs on the dotted line, that’s the starting point, not the destination. From that moment, your job is to nurture, support, and build a genuine long-term partnership. The franchisors who get this right build thriving networks. The ones who don’t? They spend years firefighting problems that were baked in from day one.

Recruiting the wrong franchisee, just to get that franchise fee in, is one of the most costly mistakes a franchisor can make, not just financially, but in time, energy, and reputation.

Here’s what I’d encourage every franchisor to ask before they start recruiting:

→ Does this person fit our ideal franchisee profile?
→ Can I see a long-term partnership with them?
→ Do we have the training and support in place to set them up for success?

Recruitment strategy isn’t about filling spots, it’s about building something that lasts.

My question to you: When you look at your best franchisees, what did they have in common that you almost missed during recruitment?

I was recently asked on The BusinessesForSale.com podcast what more can be done to raise awareness of franchising as a route into business ownership. It’s a question I think about a lot.

Franchising contributes £19.1 billion to the UK economy, supports over 700,000 jobs, and 89% of franchise units report being profitable. Yet so many people still don’t recognise it as a genuine path into business ownership.

The first time I heard about franchising in this way was at university, when Sir Tom Farmer spoke about building Kwik Fit. Obviously that talk has had a pretty big influence on my own career - but it was the first and last time I heard it mentioned during my education.

As a regular guest lecturer at Queen Margaret University, I often have the opportunity to talk to the students about how businesses can grow nationally and internationally through franchising. Every time I do this, I’m reminded how many bright people have never considered franchising as a career path, an investment, or a growth strategy.

Franchising is already all around us - the home care service, the cleaning business, the local food brand on your high street. The opportunity is there - we just need more people to see it.

Shouldn’t franchising have a more prominent place in our education system when teaching young people about business?

“I can’t franchise because no one can do it like me.”

It’s one of the biggest mindset barriers I hear from founders considering franchising.

The reality? The right franchisee can outperform anything you’ve ever built yourself.

When I ran recruitment agencies, we had a struggling branch in Swindon. No matter what we tried, we couldn’t find the right manager while it was company-owned. Eventually, we converted it into a franchise territory.

A few years later, that same franchisee was standing on stage winning performance awards.

That experience completely changed how I view franchising.

Franchising isn’t about cloning yourself, It’s about finding people who:

• Share your values
• Respect the standards of the brand
• Follow proven systems
• Bring their own drive, energy and ambition

When you get that combination right, the results can be incredible.

The strongest franchise brands aren’t built by one exceptional founder doing everything themselves, they are built through collaboration with exceptional franchise partners.

I recently spoke about this on the Podcast and shared why so many founders underestimate what the right franchisee can achieve.

If you are holding back from franchising because you think “no one can do it like me”, that may actually be the very thing limiting your growth.

“One conversation can completely change the direction of your career.”

When Suzie stepped into a leadership role within a large recruitment business, she was given something that became a defining moment in her journey: trust.

The CEO told her: “Go and do it your way. I’ve got your back.”

That support gave Suzie the confidence to lead with her entrepreneurial instincts inside a corporate environment, and it changed everything.

It’s a reminder that sometimes the most powerful thing we can offer another woman in business is belief, encouragement and space to trust their gut and step fully into their potential.

Because one moment of support can create a ripple effect that leads to incredible things.

Today, that experience shapes how Suzie leads and supports other women in business: lifting others up, backing their ideas, and creating environments where they can thrive.

What’s one piece of encouragement from another woman that changed your confidence, career, or direction in life?

Self-doubt shows up for everyone, even the people you admire most.

The difference is what you do next.

Ahead of her talk at EWIB this Wednesday “Lean In: Turning ambition into action,” Suzie shared the advice she would give to women who want to put themselves forward more confidently in business:

“Take your seat at the table.
You do have a voice, and your contribution matters.”

Too often, women hold back for fear of sounding arrogant, overbearing, or “too much.” But innovation, change, and thought leadership only happen when people are willing to speak up.

Be bold.
Be genuine.
Lead with self-awareness.
And don’t be afraid to lean in.

Because confidence isn’t about never doubting yourself, it’s about backing yourself anyway.

We are really excited to be sponsoring the Empowering Women in Business (EWIB) event and being part of the conversation on the day.
