From chimneys to owl boxes , air bricks to porches… honeybees don’t really care where they cause you an inconvenience! 😅🐝

It’s been a busy week relocating honeybees this week and a common question we are regularly asked is…

“why can’t the honeybees stay? “

Usually when a customer phones us they have lived with the bees for maybe a season or two, then the reality of endless swarming and the odd few stings starts to surface and the awe inspiring marvel slowly turns into a daily nuisance.

We ensure a very ethical and humane removal of the honeybees and allow them to live out the rest of their short lives on one of our apiaries in the area.

It is so important to report a swarm of honeybees to a local beekeeper to ensure they are collected and managed before they fly off to find a new home ! An unmanaged feral colony can transmit serval pests and diseases which are preventable under the care of a beekeeper. Not only, they could end up in cavity walls and chimneys leaving the homeowner with an unfortunate job ahead!

Finally, contrary to popular belief, honeybees are not under any threat of dying out. They are classified as farmed livestock and are actually at an all time global high. Unfortunately in many areas of the world they are now heading towards an overpopulation which can throw the ecosystem out of balance, putting additional stress on native bumble bees and local pollinators.

Swarming season has officially arrived with our first swarm call of the year!

Usually a swarm will cluster in a dense ball in a tree making it difficult to locate the Queen, but in this instance they were spread out on the floor making her easy to spot (and even managed a photo !) once she was in the hive the rest marched in after her 🐝

Beautiful little removal this week. A new colony has set up residence in this property less than 3 weeks ago!

Approximately 30,000 honeybees and around 10kg of fresh pearly white wax removed.

The bees have been successfully relocated to our Elland apiary to live out the rest of the season 🐝

Another huge colony relocated from a bedroom ceiling!

Upwards of 50,000 honeybees had been causing a fair amount of disruption for the last few years. The only way to safely remove these from the property was to internally open up the ceiling.

An extremely hot, sticky, stingy and very messy job! All wrapped up in around 8hours and the bees relocated to a local apiary to live the rest of the season in a more appropriate home

Well what a job today was! Over 40,000 honeybees had overwintered in this chimney stack. Once we opened the chimney pot we discovered honeycomb stretching down 6ft! All bees safely relocated and we even had the pleasure of personally seeing the Queen into the hive which is a rare sight on these jobs 💫🐝

This is the main reason why it is so important to contact a beekeeper when you see a swarm hanging in a bush and not say “let them bee, they’ll move on”

It’s very lucky this didn’t end badly as the fire place was active throughout winter! 🐝

Well it’s that time of year again! Spring Equinox and the bees are starting to become active after what seems a very long winter.🐝🐝

Yesterday we had our first “rescue the home owner” of the year. 🐝🐝

Not just one, but two overwintered colonies living on opposite sides of a bay window woke up after winter and started to cause abit of a nuisance for the homeowner!

As expected coming out of winter, they are both small colonies, so we decided to follow a practice called “uniting”. Where the colonies are introduced and combined to make one larger colony. Giving them a stronger chance of sustaining the relocation for the coming season 🐝🐝
