A parcel can tell you quite a lot about the fulfilment operation behind it. Not just whether the product was picked correctly, but whether anyone has thought properly about how that product needs to travel - that matters particularly in pet fulfilment.

A bag of food, a tub of treats, a bottle of supplements and a box of grooming products might all leave the same warehouse, but they shouldn’t necessarily leave packed in the same way. Weight, shape, fragility, leakage risk, the number of items in the order and how much space is left in the box all change the equation.

But there's a cost attached to getting that equation wrong. A parcel that’s overpacked can mean unnecessary materials, wasted space and higher shipping costs. A parcel that’s underpacked can mean damaged products, replacements and a customer wondering what exactly happened between the warehouse and their front door.

Neither is particularly clever...

At TSP Fulfilment, packaging sits within the wider fulfilment process. The aim isn’t to wrap everything in another layer of cardboard and hope for the best. It’s to understand the products, the orders and the journey they’re going on, then make the packing process work accordingly.
That can mean choosing the right box size, making better use of available space or simply making sure the team isn’t fighting with unsuitable packaging every time a particular order hits the packing bench.

Small decisions at the packing station can have a surprisingly big impact further down the line.

And, naturally, there’s one end customer who remains completely indifferent to all of this.

The pet.

Box arrives? Excellent. Five stars. 📦🐾

If your warehouse is starting to feel like a game of Tetris, we should probably have a chat 👀

It rarely happens overnight; at first, you find ways around it. You squeeze things in, move things around and make do with what you’ve got. Then, somewhere along the way, those little compromises start becoming part of how the warehouse operates. Which is when you usually start to notice the squeeze.

Fulfilment takes longer. Adding another product feels like a bigger decision than it should. Your team is spending more time dealing with the practicalities of getting orders out, and less time getting on with everything else.

None of it necessarily feels like a big problem on its own, but collectively, it can be a pretty good indication that your warehouse has become a bit too small for your business.

A good partnership isn’t just about working together; it’s about actually getting to know how the other side works.

We had the Karol Marketing team visit one of our warehouses last week for a PR shoot, building a bank of imagery we can use across upcoming features, campaigns, and content.

No stock photos, no pretending the warehouse is somewhere it isn’t - just our actual operation, doing its thing - with a camera pointed at it for a change 📸

Here at TSP Fulfilment, we’re big believers in working with local businesses and people who take the time to understand what we do. It makes the work better, the content more authentic, and the whole process a lot more enjoyable, while also supporting our locality!

It was a great day all round - the ideas were flowing, there was plenty of content to capture and hopefully a few photos where nobody is awkwardly standing in the background.

Keep an eye out - you’ll be seeing some of the results of the photoshoot in the near future... 👀

More orders are a good thing.... until your fulfilment operation starts struggling to keep up 😅

For pet brands, a jump in orders can look great on the sales dashboard, but behind the scenes, it can create a very different picture entirely.

More stock needs somewhere to go, more orders need picking and packing, more people may be needed to keep things moving, and when volumes spike, there’s suddenly a lot less breathing room between an order being placed and that parcel needing to be out the door. It can be even more noticeable with pet products - a growing range might mean everything from small bags of treats to bulky food, subscription orders and mixed baskets all being handled under the same roof.

That’s where fulfilment can become a real bottleneck for pet brands.

If your operation has been built around one level of demand, simply throwing more orders at it doesn’t necessarily work. You need the space, people, processes and capacity to handle growth without accuracy, service or delivery times taking a hit. The aim isn’t just to fulfil more orders; it’s to be able to grow without your fulfilment becoming the thing that holds you back.

We’re putting the question to pet brands: when your order volumes increase, where does the pressure hit first?

There’s no such thing as “one size fits all” when it comes to fulfilment operations. Every business is unique, with different products and different needs, no matter how similar things may appear on the surface 😅

Two brands can sell similar, if not identical, products, experience similar order volumes and even have similar growth plans… yet have completely different fulfilment requirements.
Look behind the curtain, and it becomes clear that fulfilment is about more than storing stock and getting orders out of the door as quickly as possible.

It’s about understanding what happens between the order being placed and the parcel arriving on the doorstep:

➡️ How complex are the orders?
➡️ How quickly does stock move?
➡️ Are there seasonal peaks to plan around?
➡️ Do products need kitting, inserts or specific packaging?
➡️ Are multiple sales channels involved?
➡️ What happens when order volumes suddenly increase?

These details might seem insignificant individually. Put them together, though, and they can make a very significant difference to how efficiently an operation runs - and how well it can scale alongside the business.
..And this is where the idea of “one size fits all” starts to fall apart. The fulfilment setup that works perfectly at 1,000 orders a month might become a serious problem at 10,000. And that’s exactly when you don’t want things going wrong.

Because suddenly, you’re dealing with:

❌ Bottlenecks
❌ More errors
❌ More firefighting
❌ More pressure on your team
❌ And a business growing faster than its operation can handle

Growth shouldn’t expose the weaknesses in your fulfilment operation. It should highlight its efficiency and scalability.

A process that works perfectly for one brand might be completely impractical for another. What makes sense for a business sending single-SKU orders won’t necessarily work for one sending complex, multi-product orders. The takeaway? Your fulfilment should fit your business, not vice versa 👀

The last thing you want is to spend your time rearranging the business to suit the operational demands of your warehouse. That’s backwards. And honestly? A bit of a faff.

Your fulfilment should be built to support where your business is going - not just where it is today. If your warehouse can’t keep up with your growth, it isn’t supporting your business - it’s holding it back.

There’s a lot more to fulfilment than getting a parcel from A to B 👀

We’re proud to be supporting the Alan Shearer Foundation's
Million Pound Mission, taking care of the stock, packing and delivery of its limited-edition hoodies.

By keeping fulfilment costs down, more of the money raised can go towards the Foundation’s £1 million target and funding a second hydrotherapy pool at the Alan Shearer Centre.

We’re usually behind the scenes, but for this one, we’re extremely happy to be there 😄

Kitting might look simple from the outside, but the more components you add to an order, the more imperative consistency becomes.

In theory, kitting is a simple case of putting five products together, adding in an insert, some branded packaging - and voilà! You’re all done!

If only 😅

Operationally, several components need to arrive together, in the right combination, in the right configuration, and to the right standard. The most important part of this process? Reliable repeatability - not just for one order, but for every order. Multiply that across hundreds, if not thousands of orders and the “we’ll just put them together” stops being a strategy and quickly turns into firefighting.

The problems with kitting aren’t usually found in the first 10 kits - they tend to appear when you’re trying to produce the 1,000th to exactly the same standard as the first. What works when you’re assembling 50 kits by hand doesn’t necessarily work when you’re assembling 5,000.

This is where good fulfilment processes can literally save the day. Kitting should be designed around repeatability and efficiency: clear specifications, controlled processes, and quality checks that catch issues before they become bigger problems. At its core, good kitting is about removing variability from the process. The fewer decisions that need to be made at the point of fulfilment, the fewer opportunities there are for something to go wrong.

It’s also about taking complexity away from your brand - the more components, variations, and moving parts involved in an order, the more valuable it becomes to have fulfilment processes that can absorb that complexity and translate it into something simpler, more manageable, and more repeatable.

The value isn't simply that someone else does the assembly for you. A well-designed kitting process can give brands the flexibility to create bundles, promotional packs, subscription boxes and limited-edition combinations without having to build an entirely new fulfilment operation around each one. That matters because when kitting goes wrong, the cost goes far beyond a singular missing component. There's the additional handling, rework, delayed dispatches and customer service queries that follow - all from something that looked deceptively simple at the start.

It’s one of those things where the best outcome is the least noticeable one. Nothing missing, no inconsistencies, nothing for the customer to question - just a kit arriving exactly as it should.

Customers don't see the picking lists, assembly instructions, or quality checks behind that experience. They see whether everything arrived as it should, and whether the experience feels considered.

Pet brands don't necessarily have a stock problem. They have a stock complexity problem. It's easy enough to look at a warehouse and think: there's plenty of stock here. But what actually matters is whether the right stock is available, accessible and moving in the way the business needs it to.

A pet brand might have:

- 20 variations of the same product
- different pack sizes
- multiple batches
- subscription orders
- bundles and promotional kits
- bulky products alongside small, high-value items

Then there's the fun part: customers don't necessarily order one SKU at a time. They might want the food, the treats, the dental chews and the new toy they saw on Instagram - all in one big order. That changes how the operation needs to work.

Poor stock visibility means more stockouts, more excess inventory and more cash sitting on shelves. Poor picking processes mean more errors.
Poorly planned packaging means higher shipping costs or damaged products.

If your fulfilment operations rely on someone knowing where everything is at any one time, rather than having properly built systems behind it, scaling gets uncomfortable pretty quickly. That's why pet fulfilment needs to be designed around the product range and the way customers actually buy it - not just the number of orders going through the door.

At TSP Fulfilment, that means looking at the whole operation: inventory management, batch tracking, storage, pick & pack, kitting, packaging, shipping and returns. We recognise that the objective isn't to make a warehouse look busy but to instead make sure the right product gets into the right order, without adding unnecessary cost at every stage.

Why? Because that's exactly what reliable fulfilment looks like 🐾

Customers don’t usually think about fulfilment... and that’s kind of the point.

They don’t think about the warehouse shelves holding their order, or about the systems making sure the right product is picked. They don’t even think about the checks happening before their parcel leaves the building.

All customers know is that their order arrived when they expected it to. Which is all they realistically need to know. That’s the interesting thing about fulfilment. When it works well, it disappears into the background. But behind every smooth delivery experience is a series of decisions, processes and people working together to make sure nothing goes wrong.

Fulfilment isn’t just about storing products and sending parcels - it’s about protecting the customer experience long after the “buy now” button has been pressed. From fragile products and subscription boxes to growing e-commerce brands with thousands of orders, we help businesses create a fulfilment process their customers can actually rely on.

The best fulfilment isn’t the thing customers notice, but it is the reason they come back.

When you choose a fulfilment partner, you're not just choosing where your stock sits. You're choosing the people you'll be relying on when it matters most. The warehouse, the technology, the processes - they're all important. But when a promotion takes off faster than expected, stock needs reallocating, or a customer has a question you can't answer, what you really want is someone who already knows your business - not a generic support inbox or a different person every time you call.

That's why every client at TSP Fulfilment has a dedicated Account Manager. Account Managers quickly become an extension of your team, working alongside our warehouse and operations teams to keep orders flowing, solve problems quickly and make sure you're never left wondering what's happening with your fulfilment.

These quotes from Chloe and Dan sum it up nicely. Between them, they support brands across all kinds of industries, from fitness and beauty to premium pet food and everything in between. Every client is different. Every challenge is different. But the goal never changes: making fulfilment feel easy. The best fulfilment partnerships aren't built on warehouse space alone. They're built on trust, communication and having someone who's as invested in your success as you are.

Your stock deserves more than a storage location. It deserves a team that understands your goals, your challenges and what matters most to your customers.
