Are you intelligent?
I spent the weekend learning a new way to understand and develop Intelligence.
Based on the work of researcher and developer John McWhirter and his developing field of DBM (Developmental Behavioural Modelling).
Here's a brief review.
I learned at school kids were intelligent or not.
Later, when I studied psychology, intelligence was taught as an abstract capacity to perform in very narrowly designed tests.
And over the years various researchers and authors have emphasised particular domains of content, Emotional Intelligence, Social Intelligence, Musical Intelligence, Physical intelligence, Language intelligence, to name just a few.
McWhirter points out that, while it's been useful to expand and include more possible areas of performance, the attention of research has moved to focus on various contents of intelligence without developing clarity on what intelligence itself is, specifically.
McWhirter's approach is to model our behaviour experiencially. To explore what, how and why we are doing, what we are doing, when we are navigating the world. How intelligently are we meeting our needs.
He identifies 19 integrated Behavioural intelligences, that ideally we can perform together as a whole.
This includes managing our attention to stay presently connected to the world, the kinds of performance based intelligence, how cleverly we might think things through, how wisely we relate to our reasons and values, and how enlightened we are in our Ontological basis.
Notice these 5 intelligences, presence, intelligent, clever, wise and enlightened (4 of the 19 intellences) can be performed in relation to any content, whether that's from academic content, through art, music, relationships, business, or even spiritual development.
Making these intelligences universally applicable to all human life.
We practiced our awareness and application of these intelligences experiencially. Not as an academic or"intellectual" discussion.
We picked personal and professional issues, aspirations, and moment to moment examples to explore.
It was hard work but very enlightening.
I'm looking forward to learning and applying these more.
