We’ve not had time to post much recently but there’s a lot to update on.

In May the Council passed a motion that recognised the important role that the river continues to play in Glasgow. The motion, which had cross party support, “notes the ongoing consultation on the Visitor Levy proposal and calls for levy proceeds to be spent on riverside activation.” On 20 June the Council agreed to move forward with the Visitor Levy. The levy will be introduced in January 2027 and is expected to raise about £16million per year for the City!

There are no specific proposals for use of the money but the Council say that cash generated will go towards the “look and feel” of the city with investment in infrastructure and the built and natural environment as well as culture and events and marketing of the city as a destination to grow visitors. The river has suffered from years of neglect- how good would it be if we could get a decent chunk of the visitor levy allocated to bring activity and interest back to the Clyde? Please sign and share our petition so that the Council follow up their positive words about the river with some cold, hard cash from the Visitor Levy.

The Clyde was once the heart of Glasgow but it's now a lifeless place with little appeal for Glaswegians or visitors to the City. Other Cities throughout the world celebrate their rivers but it seems like we've turned our back on the Clyde.

The Council is considering the introduction of a Visitor Levy, an additional 5% charge to be added to the cost of accommodation in the City. It’s estimated that this could generate funds of £12,500,000 per year. The money raised from the Levy must be used to fund improvements in the City.

We think that the Visitor Levy presents a great opportunity to fund the improvements and events that are needed to make the Clyde a riverfront that rivals the best in other cities. Delivering on the regeneration of the river could boost tourism and increase Glasgow's appeal, contributing significantly to the local economy. Perhaps more importantly, it will give Glaswegians a river that they can be proud of again!

Show your support by signing the petition to urge the Council to dedicate some of the income from the proposed Visitor Levy towards the rejuvenation of Glasgow's waterfront.
