We’ve launched our Summer of Training.

These are practical online workshops designed for people who want to communicate more confidently, create better content and develop new skills.

Usually we deliver this training to organisations, teams and senior leaders across the UK. This summer, we’re opening up some of our most popular workshops to individuals, freelancers, small businesses and smaller teams too.

Topics include:

• Media training
• Presentation skills
• Smartphone video
• Podcasting
• Storytelling
• Descript editing

Small groups. Live online sessions. Practical skills you can use straight away.

A short clip from the Powerful Communication podcast.

One of the biggest benefits of media training is feeling calmer and more in control when the pressure is on. You learn how to prepare properly, answer with clarity, and handle difficult or overly simplistic questions without getting flustered.

Sometimes that means explaining the bigger picture instead of accepting the question exactly as it’s framed.

Get in touch if you’d like to build more confidence across your team.

I’ve been recording a webinar about the psychology behind storytelling and behaviour change. I find it fascinating what’s going on in our brains when we experience a story.

I often say storytelling has three superpowers: attention, empathy and action.

The conflict in a story grabs our attention. Our brains release cortisol — the same hormone linked to our fight or flight response — making us more alert and focused on what happens next.

Then comes empathy. As we connect with a character and their struggles, our brains release oxytocin, helping us feel more emotionally connected, open and receptive.

And finally, action. When we see someone change, overcome something or experience a transformation, it can influence our own beliefs, attitudes and behaviour too.

That’s why storytelling is such a powerful communication tool. It’s not just a “nice extra” or a creative flourish. Stories help people care, remember and respond.

Whether you work in communications, leadership, fundraising, training or marketing, understanding how stories shape human behaviour can completely change the way you communicate.

Last week a client sent us a clip of one of their team appearing on a major TV news programme.

Another participant on a recent course came back for a refresher about a year after we first worked together. He spoke enthusiastically about opportunities he’d had to put the training into practice.

It’s always rewarding to see.

But one of the interesting things about media training is this: sometimes a long time passes between the training itself and a real interview opportunity.

That’s why we always encourage clients to keep practising the skills in other communication settings too.

Media training isn’t just useful for TV or radio interviews. The same skills apply to presentations, social media videos, stakeholder engagement, departmental briefings and plenty of day-to-day professional conversations.

And often, keeping those skills sharp doesn’t require another full training day.

Sometimes 20 minutes on Zoom or Teams is enough to practise key messages, sharpen answers and rebuild confidence.

Social media teams are under huge pressure to “get engagement”. But reach and views alone don’t tell you much.

You can get attention by being outrageous, controversial or jumping on trends. That doesn’t mean your social media is helping your organisation achieve its goals.

A better question is: What are we actually trying to achieve?

That might be:

* More enquiries
* More event sign-ups
* Better stakeholder relationships
* Greater trust
* More people visiting your website
* More support for a campaign
* Better reputation in your sector

Once you know the real objective, your measurement becomes much clearer.

Don’t just measure attention. Measure impact.

Colin working through the Answer – Bridge – Content technique with a client during media training.

This is a really useful technique when you’re being interviewed.

You’ll often see it used badly — especially by politicians trying to dodge a question.

But that’s not the point.

Used properly, it helps you stay focused on what actually matters. It gives you a way to guide the conversation back to your key messages, especially when questions take you off track or miss the point.

That’s important when you’re speaking on behalf of an organisation. You’re there to share something valuable, not just react to whatever gets thrown at you.

Tell us where you’ve seen use this used effectively - or not.

Even if you never plan to speak to journalists… the media still matters more than you think.

In this clip, we talk about a hidden reality: the people you want to influence are already watching. Through media monitoring, your name, your organisation, your voice — it’s all being tracked. And that visibility carries real weight.

That’s why media training isn’t just about interviews. It’s about showing up well wherever you’re seen.

And if you want to build those skills in your team — from handling the press to speaking on video — that’s exactly what we train people to do.

Recently Emma was working with a team who spend a lot of time out at events, in schools and running volunteer activity.

Really important work; the kind of thing that should be shared.

But they were frustrated with the photos and video they were getting.

A lot of them said the same thing: they didn’t feel confident, didn’t know what to focus on, and often left it until the last minute.

We worked on a few simple ways to shift that; from taking photos and video to telling stories.

I’ve written up a short case study on how it worked: link in bio.

The worst time to discover a weakness is during a real crisis.

We create a safe, high-pressure environment where teams can test themselves, make mistakes, and learn fast.

Our scenarios are based on real situations organisations face: media enquiries, social media pressure, internal comms challenges, and fast-moving reputational issues.

We offer half-day and full-day sessions, with two formats: Crisis Response (focused, medium intensity) and Crisis Response Live (more immersive, fast-paced, and realistic).

Everything is tailored to your organisation. Best place to start? A conversation about what you need.

Behind the scenes on a shoot.

One of the things I’m always thinking about is how much value we can get from a single interview.

Not just one video. But multiple pieces of content that can be used across different platforms.

The filming is just one part of it.

The thinking behind it is what makes it work.

Podcasts are a powerful way to explore ideas in more depth.

They give you space to have proper conversations, share insight, and build trust with your audience over time.

For businesses, they can also become a really practical content tool. One conversation can turn into multiple clips, social posts and ideas to share more widely.

That’s the part people often struggle with. Where to start, how to structure it, and how to make it work consistently.

That’s where we come in.

We might produce the podcast with you. Colin bringing his broadcast experience to chair conversations or round table discussions, helping draw out the most interesting points and keep things focused.

Sometimes it’s more documentary in style. Recording on location, capturing real moments, ambient sound and atmosphere, then shaping it all in the edit to tell a clear story about your work.

Or we support from the inside. Coaching in-house presenters 1-2-1 so they know how to ask the right questions, guide a conversation and keep the podcast structured.

And increasingly, we’re helping teams think about video podcasts too. So longer conversations can be filmed, then cut into shorter clips for Reels, Shorts and TikTok.

From idea to launch, we can help. Production. Training. Ongoing support.
