IB Maths AA HL examiners flagging this as yet another simple idea students repeatedly make mistakes on. Don’t be one of them!

Be confident in your use of complex numbers to change between the different representations fluently! Cartesian, polar and exponential forms. That will go a long way!

One of the easiest marks to throw away in IB Maths AAHL Complex Numbers that too many IB students make mistakes on👇

If

z = 4-3i

then:

✅ Re(z) = 4
✅ Im(z) = −3

NOT −3i

The imaginary part is the coefficient of i — the i itself stays behind.

And this isn’t just a tiny technicality. The May 2024 AAHL examiner report specifically highlighted students making this exact mistake.

Simple fix. Easy mark. Take it. 😎

The AAHL topic I would NEVER leave until the final week? Vectors.

Published AAHL examiner reports repeatedly flag difficulties with vectors and 3-dimensional geometry — and one specifically recommends developing students’ spatial reasoning.

That matters.

You can brush up on a formula quite quickly.

But visualising lines, planes, intersections, angles and movement in three dimensions takes repeated exposure and practice.

So if vectors are currently sitting in the “I’ll deal with that later” pile…

I wouldn’t leave them there for too long. 😎

I mentioned yesterday that Complex Numbers was in my opinion that hardest topic in IB Maths AAHL. Today, I’m going to share with you what I consider to be the most under-estimated topic in AAHL.

And the examiner reports for IB Maths AAHL make for very interesting reading!

Sitting IB Maths AASL this November? These are 3 things I’d be doing right now.

1. Mark past papers using the actual markscheme — not just right or wrong.
2. Get properly fluent with your GDC before Paper 2.
3. If you get stuck on one part of a Section B question, keep going.

A wrong answer doesn’t always mean the whole question is gone, and getting stuck on one part doesn’t mean the next marks have disappeared too.

I’m also working through the published November papers looking for patterns and high-value revision areas, so follow for the prediction series.
