The rats are moving indoors. Here is what to do if you hear scratching at night.

As temperatures drop across Northamptonshire, rat colonies that have spent the summer in gardens, river banks, and drain systems begin their annual migration into the warmth of homes and outbuildings. 2026 is an exceptional year. The hottest summer on record created a bumper breeding season. Record autumn rainfall is now displacing burrow colonies earlier than usual. Rat callouts are up 43% year on year.

If you hear scratching in your walls or loft, find droppings in the kitchen or garage, or notice gnaw marks on cables, act now. A small infestation in October becomes an expensive problem by November.

The River Nene runs through the heart of Northampton. Here is why it matters for rat control.

The Nene threads directly past the Brackmills industrial estate, through Far Cotton, and into the town centre. Its riverbanks and drainage infrastructure support large, established rat populations through the summer months. When October arrives and temperatures drop, those populations begin their annual migration, and the river corridor becomes a direct route into Northampton's residential streets and commercial areas.

This is why the Victorian terraced streets of St James, Far Cotton, Kingsthorpe, and Semilong, and the residential edges of Hardingstone, Duston, and Wootton, see consistent autumn rat callouts year after year. Properties near the Nene corridor or its drainage outflows are particularly at risk in September.

If you are in one of these areas and have noticed the first signs of rat activity, act now.

Noah's Ark Enviro Pest Control. Founded in 2004 with support from the Prince's Trust. BPCA accredited and NPTA member.

Over more than two decades, what began as animal rescue and pet transport has grown into one of Northamptonshire's most trusted pest control companies. We hold dual professional accreditation, BPCA-approved by the British Pest Control Association and a member of the National Pest Technicians Association. No local Northampton rat control competitor holds both.

When we treat a rat infestation, we inspect first. We identify nesting sites, active runs, and entry points before applying treatment. We use professional-grade rodenticides and tamper-proof bait stations to protect children, pets, and non-target wildlife. And if rats return within the guarantee period, we re-treat at no extra cost.

Rat callouts are up 43% year on year. This is the busiest autumn for rat activity on record.

Summer 2026 was the hottest on record, creating ideal breeding conditions for a larger-than-usual rat population. Record autumn rainfall is now flooding burrow systems and displacing colonies into buildings earlier than in previous years. The NPTA confirms rat infestations are up 38% nationally, with some regions reporting increases of up to 50%.

September was when they started to move indoors. The sooner you act, the smaller the job and the lower the cost.

Why does DIY rat bait keep failing? Here is the honest answer.

Two reasons. First, shop-bought bait contains first-generation rodenticides - significantly less potent than the second-generation anticoagulants (SGARs) that BPCA-accredited professionals are licensed to use.

Second, and more importantly: bait kills the rats that consume it. It does not seal the gaps, broken air bricks, and drain defects they are using to get in. Without closing entry points, new rats follow the same routes within days or weeks. You can repeat DIY treatment indefinitely and never resolve the problem because you are treating the symptom, not the cause.

Professional treatment combined with proofing is the only approach that delivers lasting results.

Five signs you have rats - and what each one tells you.

1. Dark pellet-shaped droppings, roughly the size of an olive. The most reliable sign. Found along skirting boards, behind appliances, in loft insulation, or near outdoor bins.
2. Scratching or scurrying sounds in walls, ceilings, or under floors at night. Rats are nocturnal - this is when they are most active.
3. Gnaw marks on cables, skirting boards, or food packaging. Rat incisor teeth grow continuously and must be filed by constant gnawing. Electrical cables are a common and serious target.
4. Greasy smear marks along walls at low level, left by rat fur on repeated runs through the same routes.
5. A distinctive ammonia-like smell in enclosed spaces such as loft voids, garages, or under-sink cupboards.

In 2026, the ant season will run through October.

Warmer winters mean colonies establish earlier and stay active longer across Northamptonshire. Properties that used to report ant problems only in August are now calling as early as late April.

The window is longer. The colonies are bigger. And the longer a nest is left untreated, the harder it is to shift.

Acting now means a smaller colony, a faster treatment, and a better outcome.
