CLM Ltd were delighted to sponsor and attend the 'South of England Farming Conference' which featured an in-depth panel discussion Chaired by , with thanks to CLM Ltd's for his summary of the presentations below..
"The conference question being asked was โWhat is our land for?โ and we got a good overall picture from Tom Heap, showing the land covers across the UK as well as the amount of land dedicated to food production abroad to feed the UK.
His perspective of needing to get as much out of the land as possible in terms of all of the possible services, be it nature recovery, energy (primarily over biofuels) food production and housing.
Tim Slaney at the South Downs National Park Authority then gave us a rundown on their priorities, how they view their role in terms of supporting different uses of the land, primarily protecting , supporting access to the land and regenerative .
A great talk from followed from on what he thinks his land is for, which is to support those who work and live on it, and how he is listening to his customer base. They are asking for nature recovery, access and a beautiful landscape. He then gave us a brief walk through of his project as well as the other diversification projects they are doing at Iford, while still farming regeneratively on the best land.
We then enjoyed a talk by Paul Christian of Sentry and heard his perspective, in that land is there for growing food, energy crops etc. but primarily it is there to provide for people and that this is being made all the more apparent by changing climate and a growing population."
A fantastic and informative evening of thought provoking insights that generated great discussions.
