The Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, has announced an increase to the approved mileage allowance rates for employees and workers using their own vehicles for business journeys.

From 6 April 2026, the tax-free mileage rate for cars and vans has increased from 45p to 55p per mile for the first 10,000 business miles each tax year. The rate for mileage above 10,000 miles remains at 25p per mile. (MoneySavingExpert.com)

This is the first increase in over a decade and is designed to help offset rising motoring costs for those who rely on their own vehicles for work. The change has also been backdated to April 2026, meaning it applies to eligible business mileage already undertaken in the current tax year. (MoneySavingExpert.com)

📩 If you would like advice on mileage claims, business expenses, or tax relief available to employees and the self-employed, the team at Ashdown Hurrey would be happy to help.

We were delighted to spend time volunteering at Conquest Hospital, helping to transform one of their courtyards 🌿

Our team rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in, making the most of a few hours before the weather turned - just managing to finish before the thunder, lightning and hail arrived!

It was a pleasure to support such an important local hospital and give back to the community. A huge thank you to the team at Conquest Hospital for welcoming us.

💍 Could You Save Tax with Marriage Allowance?

The Marriage Allowance allows eligible couples to transfer up to £1,260 of unused Personal Allowance to their spouse or civil partner - potentially reducing their tax bill by up to £252 a year.

To qualify:
✔️ The lower-earning partner usually needs income below £12,570
✔️ The higher-earning partner must normally be a basic rate taxpayer

For example, if one partner earns £11,500 and the other earns £20,000, the couple could save around £214 in tax overall.

📌 You may also be able to backdate your claim to 6 April 2022 if eligible.

Once claimed, the allowance continues automatically each year unless your circumstances change.

📩 If you’d like help checking whether you qualify, the team at Ashdown Hurrey would be happy to help.

💷 Understanding Dividend Tax

Dividends are taxed differently from other types of income, with separate allowances and tax rates depending on your overall income.

For the 2026–27 tax year:
✔️ Personal Allowance: £12,570
✔️ Dividend Allowance: £500 tax-free each year

Dividend tax rates are:
• Basic rate: 10.75%
• Higher rate: 35.75%
• Additional rate: 39.35%

Your dividend income is added to your other income, which means it could push you into a higher tax band or be taxed across multiple rates.

📌 If you receive:
• Up to £10,000 in dividends — HMRC may collect tax through your tax code, or you can declare it via self-assessment
• More than £10,000 in dividends — you’ll usually need to complete a self-assessment tax return

Understanding how dividends are taxed can help you plan more efficiently and avoid unexpected tax bills 💡

📈 Understanding Capital Gains Tax & Income Tax

After your taxable income is calculated, any chargeable capital gains are added on top (after deducting the annual CGT allowance of £3,000 for 2026–27). This determines whether your gains fall into the basic or higher rate tax band.

Current CGT rates from 6 April 2026:
✔️ 18% for gains within the basic rate band
✔️ 24% for gains above the basic rate band
✔️ 24% generally applies for higher and additional rate taxpayers

Some assets are treated differently, including:
• Business assets qualifying for Business Asset Disposal Relief
• Main homes, which are often exempt from CGT
• Trusts and estates, which usually pay a flat 24% rate

Understanding how Income Tax and CGT work together can help you plan more tax-efficiently 💡

💼 Understanding Class 1A National Insurance Contributions

Class 1A National Insurance contributions (NICs) are paid by employers on most employee benefits and certain termination payments.

This can include benefits such as:
✔️ Company mobile phones
✔️ Private medical insurance
✔️ Other non-cash perks

Class 1A NICs may also apply to certain termination payments over £30,000, where Class 1 NICs have not already been charged.

📅 For benefits in kind, Class 1A NICs are usually payable annually:
• By 22 July following the end of the tax year (if paying electronically)
• Or 19 July if paying by post

Late payments can lead to interest and penalties, so it’s important employers stay on top of reporting and payment deadlines.
