Group 17 came 1st place with their response to Visit Lambeth Place's brief with 'One Voice Infinite Roots', a multifaith pavilion inspired by unifying elements of religious and modern architecture and natural forms. The group was mentored by Adjunct Professor in Design Thinking at Brooklyn College, Professor Nora McCauley.

Group 17 consists of:

• Ania Baxheri
• Melanie Hill-Cantey
• Byatriz Sapede Soares Da Silva
• Berenice James
• Calix Witteveen

Lambeth Palace challenged Sprinters to create a multifaith pavilion which eased the pandemic's creation of detachment and isolation. It had to encompass all communities and faiths who've suffered disconnection with an inclusive, beautiful, reflective and transcendent environment. Sprinters also had to consider construction, materials, ease of assembly and disassembly, and innovation.

Group 17 responded with 'One Voice Infinite Roots'. The group established 'multifaith' as a holistic and united experience connecting humans through spirituality and respect for all living beings before researching multifaith symbols and the Lambeth Palace site. After their industry expert's advice, the team took inspiration from structures like Cambridge Central Mosque and some modern architecture's use of high ceilings and natural light manipulation. A dome and skylight were incorporated into the design, to symbolise this sense of a higher power alongside arches and elements of nature.

The resulting design offers a peaceful presence, encouraging visitors to feel in the moment, self-reflect, connect to their community and surrounding nature, and feel a sense of being in a higher power.

Congratulations to these winning students, who each won a £100 Amazon Voucher, a copy of 'Design in the Age of Change' by Dr Gjoko Muratovski, and a year of Adobe Creative Cloud!

The second team to draw for 2nd place was Group 33, for their project 'Making Porcelain Personal' responds to a brief from Ted Bradley Studio and mentored by former Design Director for Digits2Widgets and Visiting Lecturer Jonathan Rowley.

Swipe LEFT to see their design process, and scroll down to discover more details about the project!

Group Endeavour consists of:

• Luka Leung

• Brisa Tatiana Yugar Ramirez

• Serena Baron-Servini

• Victoria Zabeo

• Danika Lewis

Ted Bradley Studio challenged Sprinters to devise a social media campaign, digital or physical activity making lighting relevant capturing issues around craft, materials, slow manufacture and sustainability; and captures the significant work happening to make a difference to the whole supply chain.

'Making Porcelain Personal' targets waste while strengthening the connection between Ted Bradley Studio and new and existing audiences. The group looked at the work of Myriam Greff: a French Kintsugi artist who repairs broken ceramics with gold and silver, and suggested a potential collaboration, with Greff performing Kintsugi to bring life back to broken porcelain light rings.

Group 33 also generated a social media campaign for Bradley's brand, 'Ring DNA'. By showing the design process of rings manufactured and released with Bradley via Instagram Posts and Stories, the brand could establish sentimental connections with its customers while enticing viewers with the fascinating behind-the-scenes. The project also featured new ideas for 'rings' with unique shapes and different colours of porcelain and lighting, including the potential for mood lighting and daylight-tracking lights; and the potential to include little tidbits like a QR code to display details like quality grading, unique challenges with the design, etc.

Congratulations to these winning students, who each won a £50 Amazon Voucher and a copy of 'Design in the Age of Change' by Dr Gjoko Muratovski!

We had a draw for 2nd place, with one of these winning groups also achieving the Student Choice Award: Group Endeavour! The group's project 'Bonding Generations' responds to a brief from Newell Brands and mentored by MD and consultant, Sam Oxley.

Group Endeavour consists of:

• Faaizah Afzal
• Haider Hameed
• Mamusu Jabbie
• Maria Marquez
• Ruby Hargreaves

The Newell Brands company challenged sprinters to devise a never-before-tried marketing plan engaging students of all ages in writing with the division's brands. Group Endeavour's 'Bonding Generations' sees Newell Brands' Parker Pens brand collaborate with the James Bond 007 brand to create a multi-functional, sleek, stylish pen launched with a spy-themed escape-room pop-up event.

The group's proposal takes inspiration from the Parker Jotter pen's appearance as a spectacular device in Goldeneye, and from Parker pens holding sentimentality as a family heirloom. The group also anticipates new releases of the James Bond franchise appealing to younger generations: yet another inspiration towards the theme and title 'Bonding Generations'.

To entice their target audience further Group Endeavour's marketing scheme takes advantage of technology and social media platforms like Instagram and pop-up events. The collaboration's launch would see a pop-up escape room experience, merchandise store and cafeteria featuring a themed structure and activity that immerses visitors in the luxurious, enigmatic world of spies.

Congratulations to these winning students, who each won a £50 Amazon Voucher and a copy of 'Design in the Age of Change' by Dr Gjoko Muratovski!

From with Herts Propeller at University of Hertfordshire, we're showcasing the work of the four winning teams over this week!

We're starting with 3rd-place winner Group 43 and their proposed project the 'Graduate Pen': created in response to a brief from and mentored by Associate Professor Business Management at Brooklyn College, Veronica Manlow.

Swipe LEFT to see their design process, and scroll down to discover more details about the project!

Group 43 consists of:

• Zaki Hassan
• Caroline K. Ng
• Evgenia Astafyeva
• Alice Nelson
• Nikhil Dhiri

The Newell Brands company challenged sprinters to devise a never-before-tried marketing plan engaging students of all ages in writing with the division's brands. Group 43 discovered that the luxury market's share of Millenials and Gen Z was growing, with Cultural Pioneers signalling the market's direction.

Based on their insights, Group 43's 'Graduation Pen', designed for Newell Brands' Waterman Paris brand, came about: promoting luxury as part of a lifestyle valuing the experience of a beautifully made product. Inspired by the sentimentality and milestone-marking of Graduation Rings, each pen features one's graduating class, Alma Mater and initials and can be colour-, material- and style-customised online. Customisability - combined with add-ons like a stylus attachment, display cases and pen pouches - also add an extra layer of personalisation that younger audiences and collectors could incorporate into their unique lifestyles.

The group also suggested collaboration with other luxury brands to expand the Waterman® customer base with the Graduate Pen's array of customisability offering limited edition and collectable products.

Congratulations to these winning students, who came 3rd place and each won a £25 Amazon Voucher and a copy of 'Design in the Age of Change' by Dr Gjoko Muratovski!

In January our Design students united with higher education institutions from across the globe for the return of the annual Design Sprint from Herts Propeller at the University of Hertfordshire.

Students in multi-disciplinary teams, from Architecture and Industrial & Organizational Psychology to Illustration and Accounting, evolved their ideas to address industry briefs centred around sustainability, the circular economy and health and wellbeing.

11 of our School’s disciplines took part this year, including Design Crafts, Fashion and Fashion Business, Graphic Design (with Advertising and Branding) and Illustration, Digital Media Design, Photography, and Product Design.

Each discipline involved brought an abundance of unique skills to the table: reinforced with guidance from expert mentors from the University of Hertfordshire’s School of Creative Arts, Brooklyn College and the wider industry.

On top of the superb work experience, the impact our creatives have on industry, and a fantastic opportunity to network with students globally, winning teams also got incredible prizes: free access to Adobe’s Creative Cloud for 1 year, up to £100 in amazon vouchers, as well as Gjoko Muratovski’s ‘Design in the Age of Change’… and pizza!

This week we will be showing you the amazing outcomes produced by these collaborations. Congratulations to all our participants for getting your sprint on!
