It's the end of Carers Week, and on Wednesday, we spent the afternoon with the people it's all about.
We joined the 𝗛𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗺𝗽𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗛𝘂𝗯 at The South Hill Centre, a regular get-together where unpaid carers in the area can swap stories, take a breather, and lean on each other. There was a bit of sewing on the go, plenty of chat, and (we'll admit) a box of doughnuts that didn't last long.
𝗝𝗼𝘀𝗵𝘂𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗶𝗺𝘀𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗲 and 𝗠𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗮 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗰𝗶 from our team went along to say hello and lend a hand. Most of the care given in this country never appears on a payslip. It's the daughter who calls in every morning before work, the neighbour who does the shopping, the husband who's become a full-time carer without ever planning to. They do it quietly, around the clock, and rarely ask for anything back. The same goes for the volunteers who keep hubs like this one running. They deserve our thanks far more often than once a year, so this week, loudly: thank you.
Thank you, too, to Carers in Hertfordshire for organising Carers Week, and to everyone who made us so welcome. We'll be back.
