I was speaking at a networking event a few weeks ago and I looked around the room. You can’t really avoid it when you’re stood in front of everyone, but even so I’m a real people watcher. I love it!

Not everyone was in their business best. Some women were really casual, and relaxed, and dressed like…. well….. themselves!

I didn't trust them any less. Not even a little bit. Instead I was quite fascinated by the different styles in the room. The different businesses, and how those women chose to show up that day. So many different personalities on show.

My brain did what it does and got stuck into the expectations placed on women, and it made me think about this rule so many of us have been given and have accepted - dress professionally or people won't take you seriously.

Who wrote that rule? And why are we still following it?

Well, I can answer the first part – men! But also, I know the answer to the second part too. Because we’ve been conditioned. Because life is easier if we just go along with it.

There's a big difference between a dress code and a personal style. One is imposed on you. The other is yours.

I find that the women who look like themselves are usually the ones people remember and trust more, and I don’t know a single woman that wouldn’t want that.

I’m chatting about this in this week’s podcast episode. Go have a listen.

There's one piece of garlic bread left.

You want it. But someone else glances at it at the same time as you, and before you know it you've said "no no, you have it", and they do!

Now you sit there wishing you hadn't said that. Why did you say that?

You weren't being generous. You just didn't want the awkward moment where you said no, you wanted it. You wanted everyone to be comfortable so you put your wants aside instead.

Turns out you do this all the time! Not just with garlic bread either.

You do it when someone asks you to do something you don't want to do and you say yes anyway. You do it when a client questions your price and you cave and drop it so that they'll buy. You do it when you have something worth saying in a room full of people and you keep it to yourself just in case it offends someone or they don't like what you've said.

Every single time you put someone else's comfort ahead of your own needs.

People pleasing is exhausting isn't it.

It never stops either because the more you do it, the more people expect it. You become the person who always says yes.

In your business it costs you even more. It becomes the client who pays less than you're worth because you couldn't hold your price, and the projects that eat your evenings. Or maybe it becomes the opportunities you talked yourself out of because you were worried what people might think.

Learning to hold your ground and advocate for yourself is a skill. Most women were never really taught it. We were taught to be agreeable, to keep the peace, and to put others first.

But you can learn it, and then everything changes. You feel different, and then you show up differently in your life and in your business.

These are the sorts of things we can work on in The Rise Community.

It's my new membership for women who want to put themselves first for a change. It's going to be a space to develop the tools you need to hold your ground, back yourself, and push your business forward with the same energy you give to everyone else.

Doors are opening soon and if you want to be a founding member, joining at the founding member price, you'll need to be on the waitlist right now.

When I open the doors there will only be 22 founding member spaces available, so don't wait until they're released on social media. The email list gets first access.

I have a couple of spaces available for my Start That Podcast! day on Thursday.

We're spending a day covering the ins and outs of podcasting - the tech (which I promise isn't scary), how a podcast can really support and grow your business, having the confidence to record, how it supports conversation with potential clients, what makes a podcast worth listening to, clarifying your concept and your audience.....

And as if that isn't enough you'll leave with a big old list of episode ideas tailored to you and what you do, so that you can get going straight away!

It's going to be a full and fun day. Come and join us.

Thursday 7th May
at the Shell Store, Rotherwas, Hereford.

And if you're a charity or charitable organisation drop me a message first. I'd love to support you and help you be able to attend so that you can spread the word about what you do.
