The World of Trees edition 3 is now out! https://theworldoftrees.org.uk DOWNLOAD FREE NOW

As the daylight hours draw shorter and the weather becomes increasingly damp and unpredictable, it’s good to see the beautiful colour provided by nature - illustrated perfectly by our regular contributor, Bodenham Arboretum.

This edition features a variety of articles focused on ash. We take a look at ash dieback; discover how ash can be planted to form a practical work of art and there is even a book review. Guess its title? Yes, it’s called Ash! I gleaned so much information from my interview with Ted Green that this issue features part one of a two-part special.

Thank you, the reader, for all the wonderful comments received since The World of Trees launched. Your feedback is much appreciated!

Tree retention on a development site: being practical.

‘I want to keep the hedge’, said the applicant. ‘It may help to get permission’. ‘And I want to extend the house’. ‘Where is the room for the digger to dig the new foundations?’ ‘Good point’!

'Sometimes, you need more information. Kevin Martin using the PICUS to assess the potential extent of decay on a tree with evidence of structural weakness. I thought that this tree needed attention.......the PICUS confirmed this.' This is a level three assessment using TRAQ. Both Kevin and I hold this accreditation.

Summer Survey Time

These summer months are an ideal time to survey trees for vigour and any dead wood. It tends to stand out like a sore thumb. Well, to me it does! A timely survey now will enable programmes of work to be budgeted and planned for the months and years ahead.

Going the extra mile

I was only asked to do the Impact Assessment. I checked the landscape scheme. The proposal was to plant native hedging. A good idea....except the architect had chosen from the field hedge list including plants with thorns, for a family home. I suggested Beech, more suitable and everyone is happy. 👍

Tree protection is more than box-ticking.

The client ‘just needed a Tree Protection Plan for planning conditions’. I looked at the plan and saw an Ash situated very close to one of the proposed new homes. ‘Where will the scaffolding go?’, I asked. ‘Is the tree fully grown’? There was a pause. Is your proposal practical?

A day learning at Kew Gardens

Just spent the day with Kevin Martin of Kew Gardens, doing advanced level decay assessments. Not only is he good at this, he is also an amazing mine of knowledge. We passed a Lime tree (not being assessed) and noted the bulge on the trunk at about one metre. Tilia tomentosa grafted on to Tilia europea root stock. Tilia tomentosa does not produce viable seeds. Mental note made.

The graft was Victorian, because the Victorians grafted at this height. Kevin paused; we were in the garden of a house built in the 1970s. How did a 150-year old tree get here? Answer is the house was built in the grounds of a large house. We then looked at the tree we were assessing, a beech tree. Kevin noted the lower graft and observed it was probably 70 years old, as the approach had changed by then! I never stop learning.
