Starting the planning for your first Self Assessment? Don’t leave everything until January.

If you’ve registered for Self Assessment, the next step is getting your information together.

Here’s a good place to start:
📥 Income - what you’ve earned during the tax year
💷 Expenses - your allowable business costs
🏦 Bank records - statements and transactions to support your figures
📄 Relevant documents - anything else you may need to report
💰 Other income - for example, income outside your main business

You don’t need to have your tax return completed today. But getting your records together now can make the process much easier when you come to file.

If this is your first Self Assessment, starting early can make January feel a lot less daunting.

Financial stress doesn’t always look like a crisis.

Sometimes it’s quietly worrying about what you owe.
Sometimes it’s putting off looking at the accounts because you’re worried about what you might find.
Sometimes it’s chasing an overdue invoice, wondering when the next payment will arrive, or trying to work out how you’re going to cover the next bill.
And sometimes, you simply don't want to talk about it.

For World Mental Health Day, the 2026 theme is “Lived experiences heard: Real voices, real change.”

Financial pressure can affect everyone differently and talking about it can be an important first step.

If your business finances are causing you stress, you don't have to pretend everything is fine. Sometimes having a clearer picture of the numbers can make things feel a little more manageable.

Today is a good reminder to listen, talk and ask for help when you need it.

It’s nearly a year since Companies House identity verification became a legal requirement. Have you done yours?

If you’re a company director, you may have heard about the change, but perhaps haven’t got around to looking into what it actually means.

In simple terms, Companies House now requires directors and people with significant control (PSCs) to verify their identity. The aim is to make sure the people setting up, running and controlling companies are who they say they are.

Once you’ve verified your identity, you receive a personal code from Companies House.

For directors, that code is then used with your company’s confirmation statement to confirm that you’ve completed the verification process.

There isn’t one single deadline for everyone, so if you haven’t checked yours yet, it’s worth finding out what applies to you.

A year on, is identity verification still sitting on your to-do list? If you’re unsure what you need to do, we’re happy to help.

MTD has gone from something businesses were preparing for to something businesses are actually doing.

If you’re already signed up, you’ve now had your first quarterly update under your belt.

And with the next one due in November, October is a good time to ask: how is it actually going?

For some businesses, the biggest change has simply been getting into the habit of keeping digital records up to date. For others, it’s been getting used to new software, understanding what needs to be submitted or making sure everything is being recorded correctly.

The good news? Once your bookkeeping is organised and your software is doing some of the hard work, MTD doesn’t have to feel like a completely separate job.

If you’re already using MTD, how have you found it so far?

AI is becoming a much bigger part of the accounting software businesses use every day, and Xero is a good example.

Tools such as JAX can now help with things like reconciling transactions, capturing information from receipts and bills and answering questions about your financial data.

That can save time and take away a lot of repetitive work.

But there’s an important point here: automation is only as useful as the information behind it.

If something has been categorised incorrectly, a transaction looks unusual or the figures don’t make sense, someone still needs to notice it, understand why and make the right call.

That’s where the human side of accounting still matters.

The future isn’t AI or accountants, it's a combination of the two. It’s good technology, good records and the right people making sense of it all.

Before the busy season kicks in, have you checked your numbers?

If your business tends to get busier over autumn and winter, now is a good time to look at three things:

1. Your pricing - Have your prices kept up with your costs, or are you doing more work for the same return?
2. Supplier costs - Check what you’re paying for stock, materials and services. Small increases can quickly add up.
3. Outstanding customer balances - If customers owe you money, make sure you know what’s outstanding and when you expect to be paid.

A few simple checks now can help you head into your busy period with a clearer picture of your finances.

CIS sounds complicated, but who actually needs to register?

The Construction Industry Scheme (CIS) applies to certain businesses and individuals working in the construction industry.

In simple terms, there are two main roles:
Contractors - businesses that pay subcontractors to carry out construction work.
Subcontractors - businesses or individuals who are paid to carry out that construction work.

Contractors generally have responsibilities under CIS, including checking subcontractors, making deductions where required and reporting payments to HMRC.

Subcontractors may also need to register for CIS, depending on their circumstances.

If you work in construction, understanding which side of CIS you fall on is an important first step.

If you’re unsure whether CIS applies to you or your business, we’re here to help.

Payroll might look like simply paying your employees, but there’s quite a bit happening behind the scenes.

💷 Calculating wages and deductions
🧾 PAYE and National Insurance
📤 Submitting the required information
📋 Keeping accurate payroll records
📅 Making sure everything is done on time

For a small business, keeping on top of all this can become another regular admin job.

That’s why some businesses choose to outsource their payroll, freeing up their time while having confidence that it’s being handled correctly.

At Every Cloud, we can take care of the payroll process for you, so you can spend more time running your business.

Starting a business? Sole trader or limited company? The decision isn’t just about tax.

Your choice can affect:
📋 The amount of administration involved
🏢 Your legal responsibilities
🧾 How you report your business finances
💰 How you take money from the business
📊 The way you manage and plan for the future

Neither structure is automatically right for everyone.

It depends on the type of business you’re starting, how you plan to operate and where you want the business to go.

If you’re thinking about starting a business, it’s worth understanding the differences before you register. And if you’re unsure where to start, we’re happy to talk through the options with you.
