Keys work fine at home. But once you are in a workplace and have staff, contractors, cleaners, and visitors to manage across multiple entrances, they can frankly become a pain to manage.

Who has one? Who copied one? Has an ex-employee returned theirs?

That's why I increasingly recommend electronic access control to local businesses. I can install systems that make it much easier to control who can enter a building without handing out physical keys.

You’ve just moved into rented accommodation. But do you know who else might still have a key?

Previous tenants. Former partners. Cleaners. Contractors. Managing agents. Copies can stay in circulation long after they should.

I think it is a fair question to ask your landlord or managing agent: "Were the locks changed before I moved in, and who currently has access to the building?"

In shared residential properties, electronic access control can remove much of that uncertainty. Access can be granted when it is needed and withdrawn when it is not, without relying on keys that may have been copied or passed around.

Are keys becoming a problem? They get lost. They get copied. They get passed around. They stay in circulation long after staff, tenants, or contractors should still have access.

That is why I am seeing more landlords, managing agents and business owners move towards electronic access control.

With the right access system, you can decide who gets in, when they get in, and when that access should be removed. No chasing old keys. No wondering how many copies exist. No relying on outdated systems that are difficult to manage.

Landlords! Are you changing locks between tenants?

When a tenant moves out, you may get a set of keys back. But that does not always mean you know how many copies exist. Keys can be cut, shared with family, given to friends, left with neighbours or held by contractors. Most of the time there is no issue, but from a security point of view, it is still a risk. For me, changing the locks between tenancies is a sensible way to take back proper control of the property.

CCTV is only truly useful if it can see your garden.

I have seen plenty of homes where cameras cover the front door, back door, and driveway, but leave gardens exposed.

This matters because garden sheds often hold bikes, tools, ladders and power equipment.

A CCTV blind spot around a shed, back gate or dark corner can make theft more likely. Sometimes a simple adjustment makes all the difference.

I know a lot of residents are away during the summer. And it's exactly the reason I'm busy. When people go on holiday, they need to trust the security in their communal building.

- The entry system needs to work

I understand why people prop doors open in warm weather. I also know how quickly it can weaken a building’s security.

In a shared building, a communal entrance only works if it stays controlled. Once a door is left open, anyone can walk in. It bypasses the access control system, the door entry system and the intercom completely. It also puts residents in the position of relying on luck rather than proper security. That is why I always encourage managing agents, landlords and block managers to keep the message simple for residents.

These may sound like small things, but they make a real difference.

For me, good building security starts with the basics. A closed door. A controlled entrance. A system that residents understand and use properly.

I want people to enjoy where they live, but I also want them to feel safe.

That balance really matters in shared residential buildings, especially during the summer.

When the evenings are longer, I know residents are more likely to use communal gardens, courtyards, balconies and entrance areas. There may be more visitors, more deliveries, more barbecues, and more people coming and going.

I do not see that as a problem. Shared spaces should be lived in and enjoyed.

What concerns me is when the security around those spaces has not kept up with how the building is actually being used. Over the years, I have seen how small issues can create bigger risks. A communal door that does not close properly. An access control system that no longer suits the building. A rear gate that everyone forgets about. CCTV that is fitted, but not covering the areas that matter most. These are the kinds of details I look for when I review shared building security.

For me, good security is not about making a building feel restricted. It is about helping residents feel comfortable using the spaces around them, while making it much harder for the wrong people to get in.
