Going away? Don’t forget your technology!!

Here is your holiday tech checklist:

1. Unplug non-essential devices
Turn off and unplug equipment they doesn’t need to stay on, such as monitors and printers.

2. Check your backups
Decide if your router should stay on if you relay on security cameras, alarms or other connected devices.

3. Test your smart doorbell and cameras
Open the relevant apps and confirm that cameras, sensors and alerts are online.

4. Protect the devices travelling with you
Turn on “Find My Device”, install outstanding updates and use a secure screen lock.

5. Don’t advertise your holiday on social media until you are back home!
Posting publicly that your home or office is empty can create unnecessary security risk.

The Top 5 Cybersecurity Mistakes Businesses STILL Make

Cybersecurity isn’t just an issue for large organisations. Small businesses can be particularly vulnerable because cybercriminals know they may have fewer resources and less protection in place.

The worrying part? Some of the biggest risks come from surprisingly simple mistakes and we see these on a daily basis!

1️⃣ Weak or reused passwords:
Using predictable passwords (or the same password across several accounts), means one compromised login could potentially open the door to much more.

2️⃣ No Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA):
A password alone is no longer enough. MFA adds an important extra layer of protection, particularly for email, Microsoft 365 and other critical business accounts.

3️⃣ Delaying software updates:
That “Remind me later” button can be tempting! But updates often contain important security fixes. Delaying them can leave known vulnerabilities open to attack.

4️⃣ No employee cybersecurity awareness:
Your team can be one of your strongest defences, but only if they know what to look for. Phishing emails, fake login pages, scam calls and fraudulent payment requests are becoming increasingly convincing.

5️⃣ No proper data backup strategy:
If your business was hit by ransomware, accidental deletion or a major system failure tomorrow, could you recover everything you need?

HOW STRONG ARE YOUR PASSWORDS?

Over the last couple of weeks, we have seen an increase in clients having issues with their passwords. We use passwords for almost everything: email, banking, shopping, social media, cloud storage and work systems.

But are you still using the same password (or a slight variation of it) across multiple accounts?

If one account is compromised, reused passwords can give criminals the keys to much more of your digital life.

Here are some password habits worth checking:

🔑 1. Never reuse important passwords

Your email, banking and other critical accounts should all have unique passwords.

🧠 2. Longer is stronger

Avoid names, birthdays and predictable patterns such as Password123! Longer, genuinely unpredictable passwords or passphrases are much harder to crack.

🔐 3. Consider using a password manager

A reputable password manager can generate and securely store unique passwords, so you don’t have to remember dozens of them.

📱 4. Turn on Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

A password alone shouldn’t be the only thing protecting your most important accounts. Where available, add a second method of verification.

🚨 5. Never approve a login you didn’t request

Unexpected password reset emails, MFA prompts or login notifications could mean someone is trying to access your account.

📧 6. Protect your email password carefully

Your main email account is often the gateway to resetting passwords for everything else. If someone gains access to it, they could potentially access far more than your inbox.

⚠️ And remember: never give anyone your password or verification code!

Is your landline ready for the Big Switch?

By January 2027, the UK’s traditional analogue phone network (PSTN) is due to be switched off as part of a nationwide upgrade to digital services.
