Annaghmore Schoolhouse...was built by the O’Hara Family in the 1860s in a Tudor Revival style for the children of their tenant farmers at Annaghmore Estate, Co. Sligo. The property comprised a single classroom with modest ancillary living accommodation for the schoolmaster. A brick lean-to was added later to accommodate a scullery.

When we found it hidden in woodland, the building was in a sorry state of disrepair, but thankfully retained the quirky Victorian charm. The design intention was to retain the character and feel of the original spaces. The process faithfully adhered to the principles of retaining and repairing where possible. Care was taken to re-use and renew materials. All key features of the property were reinstated. All interventions matched the materials replaced. For example, new lath and lime plaster partitions, leaded lights with crown glass, lime putty external render.

The result is a charming holiday home, which guarantees a sustainable future for Annaghmore Schoolhouse. @ Annaghmore, Sligo, Ireland

FANAD HEAD LIGHTHOUSE

Fanad Head is one of the most iconic lighthouses on the island of Ireland. It is a place of dramatic and spectacular beauty. The light was first lit on St Patrick’s Day 1817 and has been ever present for over 200 years.

We were very privileged to work for the Commissioners of Irish Lights to help them protect the wonderful heritage they have created around the coast of Ireland. The lighthouse and the stunning location are the attraction and no ‘grand statements’ were needed in terms of the architectural approach; instead it is in the background, being quiet and respectful.

The living accommodation had lain abandoned for a number of years since the last lighthouse keeper retired in 1983. We were asked to restore and renew the derelict cottages as high quality tourism accommodation and a visitor centre for tours of the lighthouse. The buildings were carefully adapted and sensitively restored. The restoration philosophy with this 200-year-old building was a ‘light touch intervention’. The plan respects the original layout with a few small but crucial changes.

This project was extremely challenging, as the building is a protected structure of national significance on a stunning coastal location. The complex lies within the sensitive Natura 2000 network. It is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and a Special Protection Area (SPA). @ Fanad Lighthouse

The Canal Stores completed in the 1840’s were built at the same time as the canal to provide storage for goods transported along the network.

The complex consists of a group of small industrial buildings, typical of the time. Built with stonewalls, slate roofs and metal sheeting. They now stand as a reminder of the industrial and commercial heritage of the canal.

The two-storey extension appended to the end of the previously restored block has a pitched roof and is entirely clad in zinc. The form and material responds to its industrial history and setting. The material gives it a crisp and contemporary feel.
4 years on we have just applied for planning permission to restore the canal workers cottage to bring it back to its former glory! @ Ulster Canal

The Cooper House...We are thrilled that planning has been approved 🤗 definitely one of our more extravagant proposals featuring smooth white render walls and to contrast a Cor-ten steel box gently resting on top. The proposal looks out over lough Erne, just imagine sitting on that balcony! @ Enniskillen

Rainey Endowed GS Sports Complex Perspective Journal...”The hall is naturally lit at a high level and cross ventilated along both long elevations; the east and west sides. The space is beautifully lit, drama is added by its sloping roof and the light palette of the floors enhances the fresh ambience and individuality of the hall. The architects have also paid attention to design opportunities elsewhere in the building. The PE classroom and changing rooms have been coordinated with the school colours; red, black and grey. The fitness suite has a wonderful view out to the mature surroundings of the complex. The corridor space is treated as a street and informed by the simple yet effective vocabulary of its ceiling. Circular light wells and circular recessed lights of two sizes are integrated and these give that transitional space a blended rhythm of natural and artificial light. Finally the design triumph is the treatment of the overall building design and the degree of attention that has been paid to making the complex so much more than simply one large sports space with surrounding accommodation. @ Magherafelt
