I can’t resist posting this extract from a note received from a sailing pal earlier today……

“I’m not sure whether I mentioned the delivery trip I did from Ardrossan on the Clyde to Plymouth?

M. and I were enjoying a pint in her local back in November and we fell into conversation with a chap who let it slip that he was purchasing Hallberg Rassy 352 in Scotland and by the end of the evening I had agreed to help deliver the boat.

I didn’t hear any more until February so was surprised when he texted me mid Feb with ‘do you remember our conversation.........?’

It was a bit of a risk as I didn’t know him from Adam but we managed to complete the task, arriving Plymouth on the 27th April after a 10 day voyage.

We had a few incidents like when we came into close contact with a submarine on the leg from Scotland to Belfast!

We were in about 140m of water when the depth alarm suddenly went off showing 1.5m, which stayed in place for over two minutes and then reverted to 140 again.

We looked at the chart and noticed a reference to ‘submarine training area’ and the Irish Marina manager at Bangor confirmed that this was not an unusual occurrence.

Fortunately Ralph the owner turned out to be good company and apart from him getting first stage hypothermia on the overnight passage from Kilmore Quay to Newlyn, all went well, oh, and some nasty strong easterlies all the way from Lands End to Plymouth”
