I write content for entrepreneurs every day. And I LOVE it but…

There’s nothing like the feeling of a creative project coming together!

I’ve written and published 7 children’s rhyming picture books since 2018, but my usual illustrator is a fantastic designer, and currently in demand for commercial projects.

I’ve been looking for someone else to help me bring my stories to life for a while now, and although I know some brilliant artists, no one’s been in the right place at the right time.

Do you believe in coincidences? The older I get, the less I do!

About a month ago, I was talking to a friend about this stumbling block, and walked into a cafe for coffee. Serving me was a school friend of my son, sporting a classy new tattoo - my all-time favourite Klimt painting in miniature on his arm.

I happened to know he had recently left Glasgow School of Art to join a new course, and I also know he’s an extremely talented young man with stacks of empathy - a must for children’s illustrations.

Instinctively, I asked him if he would like to help me (I had literally just been talking about it) and he was really enthusiastic to give it a go!

In record time, he’s provided me with ideas for every spread for a new picture book, and they’re a sensitive, well-designed interpretation of each verse of my story.

The next step is for him to bring these sketches to life as watercolour paintings and I’ll have them art-worked into a book for small children dealing with anxiety: ‘The Boy in the Bubble’.

I took off last week at short notice…💨

But, it was only possible because I have such a supportive boss and work as part of a great team (thank you Meghan Downs and Claire McCabe).

The holiday I took earlier this month just didn’t feel like a holiday (ever had one of those?) and with everything under control, I explained I’d really appreciate a few more days to do some creative writing.

I knew that if I had some time to relax and write purely for the love of it, I’d get my mojo back and it would show in the quality of the content I produce.

It’s worked. I’m writing a case study this week for a very successful entrepreneur and it needs to be great! Because of my time off the ideas and the words are flowing so much more easily.

Here’s the Isle of Arran on Friday…it’s just an hour on the ferry from my home town of Troon and such a peaceful place to visit!⛴️🌊😊

If you’d asked this 5-year-old what she wanted to be when she grew up, she would have replied without missing a beat...

A writer. Always a writer.

She read everything. Got totally lost in stories. Could shut out the world and forget about everything else.

Writing felt like painting pictures with words, and it still does.

These days, I write blogs, email sequences, scripts, ads and more.

I’m constantly learning what works, how good content generates leads and sales, and how structure, tone and timing all matter.

But the joy and the creative flow are still the same. I love shaping words into something that connects.

For a while, I wrestled with the idea that I had to choose between being 'creative' and writing for business.

Turns out, you don’t have to pick a side.

You can help people grow their business and stay true to yourself.

That’s what I want to keep doing for clients with good ideas and kind values, the ones who want to make the world a little bit better in their own way.

And to that funny wee girl with the sunny personality, huge '70s collar and bows in her bunches: don’t worry, you did grow up to be a writer! 💙

Thoughts this evening…🤔

There’s been a big shift towards video-first content lately. And to be fair, it makes complete sense.

Marketing budgets aren’t limitless, and video connects quickly. It feels personal and grabs attention.

But when someone’s looking for something they still search…

And when they do, they’re typing words into Google (or ChatGPT), not video titles.

I’m convinced long-form written content (from a human) still matters.

An empathetic, well-structured blog post gives people answers. It builds trust. And it’s around after a video has disappeared.

Video is brilliant for reach — no argument there. And yes, it can be repurposed in lots of creative ways…

But great writing gives your message emotional depth, structure, and lasting authority.

So, in my opinion they work best together!

I’ve worked in lots of different roles over the years — corporate, freelance, creative, and now with an agency. ✍️

Recently, I’ve come to appreciate there’s something very special about being part of a small team where you feel like you make a difference and belong.

At Jammy Digital, I feel incredibly lucky to work with a group of people who are not only brilliant at what they do, but down-to-earth, kind, funny, and full of great ideas.

Last month, most of us were together at Atomicon and I was reminded how much I appreciate the whole Jammy team, led by the wonderful Lyndsay Cambridge and Martin Huntbach.

They have such a genuine passion for helping hard-working people grow their business in a way that’s right for them. And being part of the process has helped me fall back in love with my work! ☺️🙏

It’s been a long while since I’ve shared much here…😬

But I’ve been busy, writing for all kinds of brilliant businesses at Jammy Digital, and working on my own projects too.

I’m a Senior Content Writer, and I sometimes take on freelance work as well, usually with small business owners who want help getting their words just right.

AND when I’m not working with clients, I’m still writing children’s books!

This isn’t a big update, just a wee hello. I’m looking forward to sharing more…☺️

It’s the start of a new working week, it’s July, the kids are off, and there always seems so much to do! 🤯

When you’re writing for a living it can be difficult to override all life’s little practical obstacles and tap into your creative side at the drop of a hat.

It made me think about this young couple who crossed my path in Italy and literally did just that.

Like many other people, I stopped in my tracks to listen to them showcase their tremendous talent in Sorrento’s main street.

When they’d finished, I saw them move to where their toddler was fast asleep in a buggy. They sat down, tired, and quietly and thoughtfully counted the coins that had been placed in their hat.

I don’t know what their particular story is, but I was full of admiration for their creative spirit and their ability to step out of their everyday grind, live life and shine.

I thought you might appreciate their story and their performance as a little inspiration for the week ahead! 🎶🇮🇹✨🙌
