🌼 Fly the Colours of Kingsbridge in Bloom 🌼

Join us & Kingsbridge in Bloom (KIB) this Saturday, 16th May from 9am to 1pm at the Kingsbridge Farmers' Market. We will have our KIB hanging baskets and lots of plants. We give a donation to KIB for every basket we sell to support their fabulous work in making the town look so beautiful. Many baskets have already been reserved but we have lots of spares and plenty of plants for your gardens & pots, all grown down the road in Slapton.

There will also be meat, brownies, veg, cut flowers, sourdough bread & honey. I'm not sure of the trader's names but if you are one of them - please do share this post so we can try to get as many people as possible to Kingsbridge.

If that wasn't enough, the Community Garden is hosting a grand plant sale and serving tea and cake. Why not make a day of it in Kingsbridge - have a mooch around the shops, grab a drink and a bit to eat - the town has so much to offer .

Please share this post (it's on our page in case you're seeing it in a group) so that we get as many people to the market and town as possible - let's celebrate Kingsbridge.

As well as perennials and seasonal plants, we grow a lot of tomatoes - both for ourselves and our customers. We are tomato obsessed! Traditionally customers go for old school favourites like Shirley, Gardener’s Delight & Tumbling Tom.

This year we are encouraging people to grow something new - heirloom tomatoes. They have far better flavour, with the most amazing colours and shapes. We have partnered with - to create just that! Tomato Revolution’s seeds are all collected from their own tomatoes in Wiltshire. They were recently featured on Gardener’s World. We have selected 4 lovely varieties - Black Beauty, Blue Bayou, Crushed Heart & Mongolian. They are all happy to be grown in the greenhouse or outside. Grow something new - you won’t regret it.

Time for your annual Valentine’s Day to reminder to make … garlic wash! A tried & trusted method of significantly reducing the number of slugs in your garden - garlic wash. It works!

The garlic wash will kill off slug eggs & deter them from visiting your plant buffet - they hate the smell. In mid February they are busy underground laying eggs - so apply the wash straight onto the soil - Slug Valentine’s Day Massacre. For the rest of the year, as it warms up, apply the wash onto the leaves of your vulnerable plants. You will need to reapply it after every rainfall. Even if you only manage to apply it in February it’ll make a big difference to the slug numbers.

Make a big batch & store it in a cool dark room where you don’t mind a strong smell of garlic!

This is happening right on our doorstep. As a result of the recent storms homes and businesses at Torcross have been severely damaged and a major part of the iconic ā€˜Lineā€ has been washed away. The Line, A379 links Dartmouth with Kingsbridge and many villages in between, including our own Slapton. It is crucial for emergency services, residents, businesses, tourists and the local economy. The alternative, narrow backroads are not fit for purpose for everyday drivers and are not built for high volume traffic. Importantly, the Line also separates the sea from the Ley - a rare ecosystem, with many unique species, and one of the most researched bodies of water in the UK.

We are fortunate to be represented by our highly competent MP, Caroline Voaden. She is representing us to seek funding for a short term and long term solution. This week she has a PM Question booked as well as a meeting with the Transport Manager. Please sign her petition to support her in saving our coastal community. Please share it far & wide. Thank you.

The first image shows the Line before the storms, the second after the storm with part of the road vwashed onto the beach and the third some of the damage caused to houses in Torcross.

Nearly every inch of the nursery is full! 3 glasshouses, 7 polytunnels & 2 outdoor growing areas absolutely full to the brim. As soon as a space appears more plants are slotted in. So many exciting plants, old favourites as well as new, exciting varieties.
