An uncomfortable truth about starting your own business:

You might expect friends, family, or people you know to be just as excited, to cheer you on, share your wins, share your posts and genuinely have your back. And sure, they don’t have to do that, they might be busy, or it might not even occur to them. But the unfortunate reality? Some simply don’t want to see you do well.

The great news is, that strangers, fellow business owners, and people you meet through networking along the way often more than make up for it. Their support, encouragement, and shared energy will keep you going more than you ever imagined.

Keep going. It is really hard. I’m still having one “good day” and multiple “what the F am I doing”? days and even more “I just don’t think I can do this” days 😅

🌎 Today is World Su***de Prevention Day, a heartfelt reminder that while reaching out often feels impossible, it can truly change everything.

⚠️ In the UK workplace, mental health challenges aren’t just personal, they’re hugely widespread. Around 1 in 6 workers are dealing with anxiety, depression, or stress at any given time. In 2021–22 alone, there were 914,000 reported cases of work-related stress, depression, or anxiety, accounting for a staggering 17.1 million working days lost. Mental ill-health now costs employers an estimated £42–45 billion each year, with presenteeism (going to work while unwell) responsible for more of that cost than absenteeism.

📈 A recent survey shows 37% of businesses experienced issues with presenteeism in 2023, up from 21% the year before, while 58% reported that mental health–related absences were adversely affecting operations.

Meanwhile, presenteeism costs the UK economy an estimated £15 billion annually, compared to £8.4 billion from absenteeism.

Mental health struggles often carry a weight that goes unseen, people showing up physically, but not mentally. Compassion and understanding can begin to bridge that gap.

It can get better, and while reaching out, or supporting someone who might be, can feel hard, it can also be lifesaving. Let’s lean into that discomfort with kindness, normalise check-ins, and keep the conversation open.
