ArchaeoDomus - Archaeological & Heritage Services With a focus towards Buildings Archaeology and Built Heritage we offer a range of recording and analysis, to restoration works and most things between.

Welcome to ArchaeoDomus Archaeological and Heritage Services, started in 2014 after leaving work with the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales with the aim of offering archaeological services and heritage advice in combination with the ability to undertake heritage building projects, all to the highest possible standards. Archaeological and heritage services can be und

ertaken as a part of a pre-planning assessment, to meet planning conditions or to provide a house history, and with our ability to offer building works we can see a project from start to finish. We provide competitive prices across a range of services on offer to private customers, developers, civil engineers and heritage bodies alike.

We're back on site with Black Mountains Archaeology at Tintern Abbey for Cadw to undertake the second phase of excavations as part of the ongoing conservation project of the monument. It's great to be back on site with the diverse team of archaeologists and specialists that we enjoyed being here with earlier this year, and grateful to many others that have helped this happen -

Thrilled to share our latest discovery from Tintern Abbey, a tile of with the emblem of Richard, Earl of Cornwall, King of the Romans (b.1209-d.1272). He was the second son of ‘Bad King John’ (b.1166-d.1216). Henry III (b.1207-d.1272), Richard’s brother, gave him Cornwall in 1225 as a 16th birthday present, which made him one of the wealthiest men in Europe. In 1257, he was elected King of Germany, though only made four visits to Germany. The first piece of tile, the smaller of the two, was found in Trench 1 on the south external side of the presbytery during the first couple of weeks of excavations. This has the unmistakable tale feathers of Richard’s two-headed eagle and demonstrated that we had one of his tiles here at Tintern. The second, larger tile, was found two weeks ago in Trench 6 running north-south across the inside of the presbytery. These were the first tiles that we found that were identifiable to a single individual, so have caused much excitement amongst us all on site here. The tile belongs to the Wessex group of tiles, which are some of the earliest encaustic (inlaid) tiles that we have in the UK, and may have been manufactured by the kilns around Glastonbury.

In 2020, ArchaeoDomus was approached by Pebble Engineering, on behalf of Dwr Cmyru, to produce a detailed survey of the Devil’s Gulch in the Elan Valley so that stabilisation plans could be engineered. In 2018, the path was closed as the rockfaces had seen several collapses and posed a significant risk to life. To tackle the survey, and to keep ourselves out of harms way, drones were used to photograph the cutting from all angles for the production of a high resolution 3D photogrammetric model, which was then passed on to the engineers.

The Devil’s Gulch was originally cut in the 1890s for the passage of Railway No. 4 for the construction of the Craig Goch dam. The railway was the last of a series built by the Elan Valley Railway to facilitate the construction of the dams, and remained in use until it was closed in 1916. The cutting earned its name, the Devil’s Gulch, after taking three months for the navvy’s to blast and cut their way through 80m of solid rock.

Thanks to Black Mountains Archaeology for helping out on site...and what a beautiful one it was too!

ArchaeoDomus was commissioned by Pebble Engineering, on behalf of Dwr Cymru, to undertake a 3D photogrammetric survey of the Devil's Gulch in the Elan Valley. The purpose of the work was to provide highly detailed elevational information of the cutting to enable a programme of stabilisation works to...
