Calf Club meeting 3! ☺️🐮

What a great evening! 🤍

We discussed what issues we typically experience around weaning, why we experience those issues, what we are trying to achieve, and how we wean calves successfully 🚀

Weaning and post-weaning is something that has been massively overlooked, and we are missing a huge window of opportunity for cost-effective growth💰

We know how important pre-weaning development is, but this post-weaning period up to approx. 6 months is when calves are still very feed efficient, and we can have further improvements on lifetime performance 🥛🥩

The next meeting is the 19th November and we will be discussing “Winter Wellness” ❄️

Thankyou to everyone who attended last night! It makes these meetings worthwhile ☺️

And a huge huge thankyou to the lovely Mason family for hosting us and creating such a great space for us to talk! 🫶🏻

Some of the lovely texts I have received since starting Calf to Cow ☺️🐮🚀

Working alongside passionate people makes the job so much more enjoyable!

And seeing calves thrive is my WHY 🫶🏻✨

12/08/2026

The 3 fundamentals of calf rearing ☺️🚀🐮

Whenever I speak at events, do training sessions, or have discussions on farm, this pyramid is engraved in my brain 🧠

In order to product healthy, productive animals, we need these 3 areas to be optimised to the best of our ability.

That doesn’t mean the fanciest calf shed, the most expensive milk replacer on the market, or scrubbing your wellies with a toothbrush… it just means highlighting the areas that may be hindering heath and performance, and creating a realistic plan to help move the needle 📈

I’m sure we are all aware that changing things can take time, and sometimes, even when we have the best of intentions, things don’t end up changing or we revert back to what we were doing before.

Having me on your team means you have someone holding your hand (metaphorically speaking 😉😂) and helping you to implement long-lasting changes, over a realistic time frame.

Rome wasn’t built in a day 🏛️

But if you’d like to start building, I’m here to help you cart the bricks 🧱🤪🚀

Message me “WEAN” if you’d like some guidance on getting the smoooothest weaning transition 🐮✈️

How are you weaning your calves?

Reducing volume or diluting with water?

When it comes to weaning, reducing stress is vital. Keeping mixing rate the same whilst gradually reducing milk volume means that calves are less stressed, are able to adjust their nutrient intake accordingly, and transition from milk to feed much easier.

If you experience bawling calves, hairy calves, pot-bellied calves, health challenges, or stunted growth… your weaning period might need reviewing 👀

Understanding that calves normally would not wean as young, or as quickly, is important. In hand-reared systems, we are speeding up processes due to space, time and costs.

Calves are on milk for 2-3 months. They’re on concentrates and forage for the rest of their lives.

We must do our best to prepare them as well as we can 🙏🏼

GB Calf Week 15th - 22nd July ✅🐮🤠

Lots of farm visits, healthy calves, exciting data, consultancy reports, some hands-on calf feeding, and new connections made 🫶🏻♥️

Started off with an excellent day at the National Youngstock Conference, finishing with a great AHDB/Dairy Carbon Network talk in Carlisle on “Reducing Antibiotic Use in Calves” 🎤🦠💉

P.S… don’t give me 30 minutes to speak because I absolutely will run over 😂

National Youngstock Conference 2026 🐮✌🏼💻

The year Calf to Cow got a table 🥳

What a great networking day it was yesterday! Met some great farmers, made new industry connections, and caught up with the best industry friends 🫶🏻 and some interesting bits of information to take home!

But the biggest thing I have reflected on from the conference, and something I’ve really appreciated since going self-employed, is that I don’t feel that same commercial competition that I did before.

I think when you work for a business, you can embed yourself quite deeply into it. Its values. Its day to day pressures. It’s commercial aims. Its vision.

But, speaking from experience, you can also lose yourself in that process. You become more defensive. Other people rub off on you, and not always in the best way. You become more critical of others in the industry. There’s internal competition as well as external. You constantly feel the pressure of targets that you need to meet. You lose your core self, your core beliefs, and the ability to appreciate that there is space for everyone.

I certainly did. And I know others feel the same too.

But my journey has also taught me that…

1) The industry is small. You never know where you will end up. You may think that you will work in your current business forever, but that is rarely the case. Often at industry events you see the same people, but the badges on the chest change. Be respectful of your competition, as they may end up your employer.

2) Just because you work for a company, no matter for how long or how much you have contributed, that company is not yours and you are not that company (unless you own it, of course). Unfortunately, the friendships you’ve built within the company may not stay with you when you leave, and you will go as quickly as you came.

I often look back and regret how I got sucked into it all. But life is full of lessons, and sitting here 12 months in to Calf to Cow has shown me that being my true and authentic self connects me to the right people. I’m so grateful that its allowed me to build genuine friendships and working relationships in the industry. My soul is finally finding its tune again ♥️
