What can Schools be doing to reduce their energy bills?

Well, different schools will face different challenges, and some will have a greater scope for making savings than others.

However, it's often reported that most organisations can cut energy spend by at least 10% by taking some simple efficiency measures, and often by 20%, by simple actions that produce quick returns on investment

Heres some tips 👇

💡Get in touch with JSR Energy Consultancy & discuss your options (details at the bottom of this caption)

💡Behaviour Change - Saving energy = Saving the Planet = Saving Money
Teaching pupils and staff of how you can be more energy efficient can save you a lot of money

💡 Check the Temperature
The recommended temperature for classrooms is 18°C.

💡Turn Things Off

💡 Maintain & Optimise

💡 Check Consumption, Bills and Tariffs
Many schools have recently had smart meters installed on their main incoming gas, electric and water supplies. These provide information about how much energy is used and when. This will help you to understand your energy use and how it can be reduced. If you have a smart meter, learn the best way to use it.

💡Make your Own energy
with energy prices so high and rising then, the business case for installing Solar Panels has never been better. There are a number of financial models to help fund Solar schemes, and in some cases, grants are available.

The government has officially announced that the review of the onshore wind ban will not be published until the autumn.

Mr Gove explained that concerns have been raised regarding the lack of clarity on how to meet the test for community backing in cases where objections exist, even if the majority of the community supports the project.

The consultation period concluded on 2 March 2023 and garnered significant support for advancing onshore wind developments, Mr Gove noted.

Greenpeace UK has expressed dissatisfaction with the delay in the review process – it claims that the Conservative ban on onshore wind has negatively impacted the UK’s access to affordable and locally produced energy.

Greenpeace UK’s Policy Director Dr Doug Parr said: “Only two onshore wind turbines were built in England last year – over 500 in Germany. After promising to review this untenable policy by April, ministers have just decided to sit on it for a few more months.

“We can’t afford to waste any more time to unlock vital solutions that can cut both carbon emissions and energy bills. Instead of dithering, Rishi Sunak should hasten to fix his predecessors’ colossal mistake and give this country the clean, affordable energy it deserves.”

🏨Hotels are some of the most energy-intensive buildings in the world.🌎

For most hotels, energy is amongst the highest expenditures of the business. ✨
With energy prices soaring across the world, and growing pressure for the sector to respond to the climate crisis, hotels are looking for ways to reduce how much energy they use in their operations.. So how? 💭

Luckily you follow JSR Energy Consultancy and we have tips to help you along the way 👇

⚡️Don’t operate heating and cooling systems at the same time.
For example, set heating to turn off at 21 degree C and air condition to turn on at 23-24 degree C, so there is no overlap.

⚡️Avoid overheating guest rooms and corridors – 19-21oC is comfortable.

⚡️Turning down your thermostat by just 1 Degree C can reduce your annual heating bill by 10%

⚡️Install timer switches and thermostats on your radiators to ensure you have good control of your heating systems and you are not heating spaces unnecessarily.

⚡️Install occupancy sensors or daylight sensors so lights are only on when needed.

⚡️Insulate pipes and block draughts around windows and doors.

⚡️Install low-flow taps and shower heads in guest rooms to reduce the amount of hot water required.

⚡️Defrost fridges regularly, and make sure the seals on fridge and cold room doors are secure.

⚡️Reconfigure kitchens so that heating appliances (e.g. ovens or hobs) are not next to cooling appliances (e.g. fridges or freezers).

⚡️Use a pool cover when the pool is not in use.

⚡️ If your current energy tariff is due to expire, look for renewable energy options as these can be cheaper (and are more sustainable) than traditional providers using oil and gas.

⚡️ Engage staff so they understand what can be done and how they can support savings (e.g. turning lights off when not in use).

Did you know we can help you reduce your hotels bills by up to 50%✨
Imagine what you could do with that money 🤩

A report outlines the need for strategic grid reinforcement in Birmingham due to its large vehicle count.

Birmingham, with its estimated count of 1.1 million vehicles, has emerged as the leading city in the UK for energy demand related to electric vehicle (EV) charging.

That’s according to a recent report by RECHARGE UK, the EV arm of the Association for Renewable Energy and Clean Technology (REA).

By 2030, EVs are projected to constitute about 80% of new car sales and 70% of new van sales, eventually reaching 100% for both categories by 2035.

This surge in EV adoption is anticipated to result in nearly 11 million EVs on UK roads by 2030, compared to the current 760,000.

To address the growing demand and ensure no areas are left behind in the transition to EVs, the report stresses the need for specific EV infrastructure solutions to resolve geographic disparities in chargepoint deployment.

The report calls for proactive planning and coordination by local authorities and National Grid to accommodate future charging demand.

Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of adopting multiple chargepoint types in safe and accessible locations.

Of all small businesses, hair salons are one of the biggest energy users! 💆‍♀️💆‍♂️

We have some suggestions for you to save energy AND money, whilst also showing your clients that you are conscious about becoming an eco-business.

✂️Switch Energy Suppliers
This is our speciality - Scroll to the end of this caption to get in touch 🤩

⚡️Switch Off Your Electricals!
It may be difficult to remember in busy salon life, perhaps add a little sign by your plugs until it becomes an automatic response

💡Install Efficient Lighting
Unlike your tools, those lights need to be switched on ALL day, so make sure you have the most efficient lighting.

🧺Do Full Laundry Loads
When do we not have a full load of towels to do eh? But sometimes, just to stay busy we put a few bits and bobs in, which can be driving up your salons energy bills.

🌬️Cool Down Your Salon
An easy way to save energy and money is to turn down the heat! When you do use heating, reduce your temperature by 2°C, you’ll barely even notice, and you’ll save save save!

♨️Boiling Down To It
Old and non-maintained boilers let lots of heat escape, and with it, your money is escaping too! Just like regular hair maintenance, think boiler maintenance!

Go disposable🚮
With the rising costs of energy, it is more economical, and sensible to use disposables e.g. disposable towels.

Luckily we are here to explore your options on reducing those sky high energy bills in your store.

No matter how big or small, we could be saving you up to 40%!

Imagine what you could spend that money on 💭

✨FULL STORY 👇
Local convenience stores are demanding improved regulation of the energy market to protect themselves from skyrocketing costs.

The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) has emphasised the urgent need for transparent information on billing, payment options, data transparency, contract terms and termination.

The ACS also highlights the importance of expanding the definition of microbusinesses to include a wider range of small enterprises, such as convenience stores.

This expansion would provide these businesses with better access to support and guidance, ensuring fair treatment in the energy market.

The association also notes that there is a lack of assistance from Ofgem during periods of rising energy costs.

Is your business struggling with energy bills? 🤯

🔥Heating and lighting💡

Keeping guests comfortable and happy means big heating and lighting costs! You might even be running outdoor heaters to keep guests comfortable outside which can be costly to run.
💚Use energy saving bulbs
💚Use sensors and timers for both lighting and heating - This is a great way to reduce the cost of outside heaters and lighting in places like the cellar.

🛠️Regular service maintenance

💚Keeping equipment clean and regularly serviced is the best way to improve efficiency and use less energy to run.
💚Regular servicing will help keep equipment running longer.
💚Check all pipes regularly as well as running regular maintenance.

📺Update old hardware 💻

💚 It’s not as difficult as you think to upgrade your EPoS system and the energy saving benefits across multiple sites can be significant.
💚Consider the addition of new tech that integrates with your EPoS that you might introduce later, such as kitchen video or order and pay kiosks.
💚Upgrading hardware now can put you in a better position down the road when opting for more technology based solutions.

With the energy crisis impacting operating costs for everyone, implementing some ‘quick-fixes’ can have a positive impact on your current energy bills.
While replacing light bulbs might seem a bit easier than updating equipment or till software, those that hold off on making larger energy saving changes now will be subject to larger energy consumption longer term.
