I'm enjoying my insect photography more than ever; it's such an amazing world to look into! Not sure what this is yet that I captured (it reminds me of a monster truck..) but what a beautiful creature...

I had an amazing day at Bempton recently, with my good friend Rob. Despite less than ideal wind, we managed some cracking shots, including birds in flight!

Here's one of my favourite seabirds, a Razorbill, coming into land on its exposed cliff-ledge nest.

Although it reduced my success rate, I slowed the shutter speed a little (this one 1/1600) to keep some wing blur.

Whatever the weather, Bempton Cliffs is a spectacular place to be!

On my Bird of Prey Workshops with SMJ Falconry we have a huge range of birds, including Owls, Hawks and Falcons. We place the birds in suitable environments, ensuring you get natural looking shots.

I concentrate on making sure that everyone is comfortable with their camera settings and getting the most out of each situation. If you're not too familiar with your gear, I'm always happy to help.

Flight photography is a big part of the day. It can be tough.. but it's always exhilarating!

If you're interested in joining us on Thursday 18th August, at SMJ Falconry, near Haworth in West Yorkshire, Message Me or Email at: [email protected]

Why do YOU take pictures?

Perhaps you do it on a professional basis, maybe you enter a lot of club competitions, or perhaps you're looking to build your social media following?

Whatever the reason, it's important to find time for YOU. Life's too short not to do the things you love.

I had a wonderful morning earlier this week photographing a Little Grebe family. I didn't film it for my YouTube channel and it wasn't done for 'likes'. It was purely for the enjoyment of the photography and watching the natural behaviour of these beautiful birds.

I felt refreshed. We all need to recharge sometimes.

I'm posting this in the hope of inspiring you to keep following your own passion, whatever that may be.

If the forecast holds, I'll be back again tomorrow morning for more of the same.. but in better light! 🤞🏼

In all my years of visiting Serbia I've never been lucky enough to see this... until last week! A beautiful Honey Buzzard - a male I believe. You just never know what you might see whilst waiting by a drinking pool.

I received some lovely feedback from Lisa who joined my Bird of Prey Workshop with SMJ Falconry back in April. This was Lisa's first ever photography workshop so I'm honoured that she chose us!

"I was lucky enough to get a place on Paul’s Bird of Prey workshop in April. What an amazing day it was. Paul was welcoming and friendly and walking around checking the settings of your camera. Being my first ever workshop this was extremely helpful to me.. I can’t wait for the next workshop! Thank you Paul for an amazing bird of prey experience. I highly recommend to anyone & everyone 🙂 "

There's still places on my next workshop on 18th August. To book a place or for more information, Message Me on Facebook or Email Me at: [email protected]

The location is Oxenhope, near Haworth in West Yorkshire.

I like to give my followers what they ask for.

So today I braved the heavy rain in Leeds to test out a rain cover for bird photography.

Did it do the job? I'm currently editing the YouTube video which will be out very soon, so you can see how I got on.

When it comes to natural lighting for insect photography, do you prefer bright sun.. or cloudier days?

A few years ago I theorised that a warm but cloudy day might just work the best. I've since tried out this technique when I can with quite a bit of success. Shooting under a cloudier sky can get round a few problems, such as harsh shadows, burnt out whites and flightier subjects.

Personally I think the ideal situation is a warm afternoon with a thin layer of cloud. You're likely to get plenty of insects about, enough light for good camera settings, but softer lighting to work with. What do you think? Do you agree, or disagree?

Here's a couple of images taken under a cloudy sky.

If you'd like to see me trying this technique, and sharing my tips on macro photography, watch my latest YouTube video (linked in the Comments below).
