As we celebrate ‘Women in Construction Week’ (2-8th March), we think this is the perfect opportunity to tell you a bit more about our director at Enhance Technical Consulting Ltd, Hollie Cowgill, about her experience of working in the industry and what she believes the sector has to offer:
· Tell us about your job?
As the founder of Enhance a newly established consultancy, i take on the primary responsibility for its success. Our consultancy offers support, advice and project management tailored to the housebuilding sector. We deliver comprehensive services for all aspects of build and planning, pre, live & post development backed by a wealth of technical expertise
· Why did you start the business?
After many years working for national housebuilders, i witnessed a steady decline in well-experienced professionals in the industry, even as demand for growth continues to rise. I want to create a consultancy that offers personalised support & knowledge, ensuring clients receive a trustworthy service. I have always prided myself on doing a great job and this is the core ethos of Enhance
· How long have you worked in the industry?
Ive worked in the industry for 18 years, starting in 2007 as an apprentice joiner, gradually advancing through various Technical Departments at some of the largest housebuilders in the UK. I gained invaluable knowledge eventually becoming Technical Manager. After a 6 month sabbatical to travel, i returned to the industry with a renewed vision to establish my consultancy
· As a woman, how do you find working in the construction industry?
Working in a predominantly male industry has its challenges, but i genuinely love what i do. I strive to advocate for others who may be considering this career path. Over the years all the hard work has been extremely rewarding and I am really proud of my continued achievements
· Would you recommend working in the construction sector to other women?
Absolutely! The industry offers a diverse range of opportunities and roles and I would always welcome and encourage women to explore the many roles available. Being in the industry for 18 years I have seen more women entering the industry which is great to see. As well as this, although there is still plenty of work to do, the environment is becoming more inclusive and supportive for all genders.
· What advice would you give to other women considering working in the sector?
Just go for it! Have the confidence to join and don’t hesitate to speak up and hold your presence. This is a fast-paced industry requiring a strong drive to succeed, and businesses are looking to support individuals with those traits
