Growing a business is not always glamorous…

Today I spent some time photographing my client and friend of TAKE FIVE SKIN AND LASER | SKIN SPECIALIST | MOUNTSORREL as she continues transforming a former restaurant into a new training and content creation space alongside her beauty business.

And let me tell you… today was NOT a day for perfectly curated backdrops.

There was jet washing. Mud. Dust. Building work. Electricians.

And Amy, in the middle of it all, rolling up her sleeves and getting stuck in.

I actually loved it, because this is the bit we don't always see.

We see the beautiful finished space.
The launch.
The polished photographs.
The “look what I've created” moment.

But long before that comes the graft.

The mess.
The decisions.
The problem-solving.
The days when you have to get your hands dirty and make it happen.

So that's exactly what we captured.

Images that feel a little rough around the edges. A little unpolished. Properly behind the scenes.

Because your brand story isn't just about the finished product.

It's about everything it took to get there.

And sometimes the most powerful content isn't technically perfect, it's honest.

When new brand images are ready, it feels a bit like Christmas Day. 🎉

And today I get to share my presence.

New brand images.
New profile picture.
And a very happy photographer.

The last profile picture I had lasted a whole year because, if I’m honest, I absolutely loved it.

And while I know there’s plenty of advice about changing your profile photo regularly, I’d rather wait until I have a photo that genuinely feels like me than change it for the sake of change.

Which got me thinking…

Why do I always look ridiculously happy in my profile pictures? 😂

The answer goes back to my 30s.

Back then, I tended to choose calm, thoughtful photos for my social media and dating profiles. I was trying to look sexy - I know!

The problem was, when people met me in real life, they were often expecting someone a little more sultry, serious or mysterious.

And then they met… me.

These days, I choose photos that reflect the energy people experience when they actually meet me.

The big smile.
The enthusiasm.
The warmth.
The occasional chaos.

Because your profile picture isn't just about looking good.

It’s about giving people a sense of who they're going to meet before you’ve even said hello.

If someone meets you after seeing your profile, they shouldn’t feel surprised by who turns up.

They should feel like they’ve already met you.

That’s what authentic visibility means to me.

So here’s the new profile picture. 💛

It feels like me.

And that’s exactly the point.

Apparently, it's kinda chic to…

Be different.
Stand out.
Have your own voice.
Be authentic.

And, apparently, follow exactly the same trend as everyone else. 😂

Hmmmm...

I'm not particularly good at following the crowd and I don't think you need to be either.

Because your business isn't everyone else's business. Your story isn't everyone else's story.

And your personality definitely isn't meant to come from a Canva template or AI prompt.

There's nothing wrong with taking inspiration from what's around you. But there's a big difference between being inspired by something and becoming a copy of it.

Your personal brand should feel like you.
A little bit odd. A little bit brilliant. Completely your own.

Because being yourself might actually be the trend worth following. ⭐️

Last weekend I was standing by the side of the road, squeezing lime onto an oyster.

Not because it would make a good photograph.

Not because it would make good content.

Just because it seemed like a rather lovely place for a rosdside snack. I wrote a lifestyle cookbook, so it happens.

A few days later, while putting together this carousel, I saw a David Bowie quote on this app:

"Never play to the gallery."

And I realised that's exactly what I try to encourage when I'm photographing people.

Not a performance.

Not a polished version of who they think they should be.

Just them.

Sometimes looking at the camera.

Sometimes looking away.

Sometimes laughing.

Sometimes concentrating.

Sometimes completely forgetting the camera is there.

The best personal brand photographs aren't about creating a character.

They're about giving people permission to show up as themselves.

Because visibility isn't about attention.

It's about connection.

I survived MTD.

Or at least I think I did...

It feels a bit like one of those mini-series that keeps getting renewed for another season when you thought it was over.

By this point, you've been hit by a steamroller, half the characters are dead, you've completely lost the plot, and yet somehow it's still in your diary, limping along on Channel 5.

Still, I'm alive, breathing, and unexpectedly cheerful, which feels wholeheartedly rebellious in 2026.

Fresh air and warm light on the other side of MTD.

What if the secret to great personal brand photography is not liking being photographed?

One of the biggest misconceptions I come across is that you need to love being in front of the camera.

That you need to know how to pose.

That you need to feel confident performing for photographs.

The truth?

Many of the people I photograph feel exactly the opposite.

They're brilliant at what they do. Passionate about their work. Full of knowledge, creativity and stories worth sharing.

But being the centre of attention? Not so much.

That's why I loved spending time photographing Traci Howard.

Traci creates incredible pieces full of imagination, character and storytelling, including Leonard the Twog, a wonderfully unique creation brought to life through wood, craftsmanship and creativity.

The magic wasn't in asking Traci to pose.

It was in giving her space to create.

That's where the most authentic images appeared.

The hands shaping her work.

The moments of concentration.

The laughter.

The quiet pauses.

The connection between the artist and the artwork.

Because personal brand photography isn't about creating a polished version of yourself that doesn't feel real.

It's about helping people see the person behind the business.

Because visibility isn't about attention.

It's about connection.

And sometimes the most powerful way to be seen is simply to be yourself.

Call me Karen*

This morning, I was driving to a meeting while listening to Don't Believe Everything You Think.

Meanwhile, my brain was telling me that 16°C at the end of July was completely unacceptable (my aircon was on full).

Somewhere in the mix, I had the distinct feeling I should ask to speak to the manager and complain about the weather.

Which is odd because:

1. I don't generally complain.
2. Nobody is actually in charge of the weather.
3. Even if they were, I'm not sure they'd take my call.

It did make me laugh though.

One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that not every thought deserves to be believed - and I've noticed a few of those this week.

Sometimes our minds are wise.

Sometimes they're helpful.

And sometimes they're trying to file a formal complaint against the British summer.

And honestly, this shows up in personal brand photography all the time.

The thought that you need to be more polished, more confident, more photogenic, or "ready" before you step in front of the camera? That's just another thought - not a fact.

So often, the women I work with arrive carrying stories their brains have made up about how they look, how they should pose, or what other people might think.

But those thoughts aren't always true.

Personal brand photography isn't about waiting until you feel perfect. It's about showing up as you are, so your audience can see the real person behind the brand.

So today I'm taking my own advice:

Don't believe everything you think.

Especially not the bit that says you need to wait until you're perfect before investing in personal brand photography.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to see whether August has a customer service department.

Bringing back the bounce with .

"Beautiful light, laughter and photos that brought back my bounce."

This is exactly why I love brand photography.

Yes, the end result is a collection of images that help you show up with confidence and connect with your audience...

…but the magic often happens before the shutter clicks.

It’s about creating the right energy. Making people feel comfortable. Giving them space to relax, laugh, and be completely themselves.

Because when your energy shines through, your audience doesn't just see what you do - they feel who you are.

That’s the real power of personal brand photography.
