Ahead of London Asia Week, we spoke with Edward Luper, Specialist for Chinese Works of Art, about a highlight from the upcoming Fine Chinese Art auction.

“I'm particularly drawn to these monumental bronze tripod incense burners that seem to hold both weight and stillness at once. William Alexander recorded similar incense burners during the Macartney Embassy to China in 1793, where they appear as part of a vast, carefully ordered world just beginning to be seen from the outside.”

“What I love most here is that they still retain their original marble stands, traditionally described as 'white jade' (baiyu) in Chinese sources, an almost poetic name for this luminous stone so closely tied to Imperial architecture.”

“It is rare enough to find bronzes of this scale, but rarer still to encounter them still united with their bases, the two elements forming a complete ritual presence as they once stood in the courts and ceremonial halls of the Qing world.”

London Asia Week will open in Knightsbridge with the seasonal Asian Art sale, featuring exceptional Japanese works of art. We asked Rachel Hyman, Senior Specialist at Bonhams London, to share a highlight from the auction.

“This exceptionally fine cloisonne enamel vase embodies the height of technical innovation and refinement for which the Ando Jubei Company of Nagoya was renowned. Finely worked in silver wire and incorporating moriage and bokashi techniques, the vivid orange enamels of the ripe fruit rest against the delicate hues of the leaves in graduated shading.”

“Ando Jubei (1876–1953) was one of the most important Japanese cloisonné enamel artists of the late Meiji, Taishō, and early Shōwa periods. Celebrated for its elegance, precision, and naturalistic motifs, the Ando company exhibited internationally, winning prizes at world fairs and was appointed around 1900 as an official supplier of cloisonné to the imperial household.”

Yosh*tomo Nara's monumental painting '…Words Mean Nothing at All' will headline Bonhams 20th & 21st Century Evening Sale in New York.

Painted in the wake of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, the work marks a more introspective turn in Nara’s practice, as he explores memory, solitude, and the limits of language. Rendered in his unmistakable style—large eyes, flattened space, and a deceptively childlike simplicity—the painting captures a pivotal moment in his mature career.

Other highlights of the week include an array of works by defining voices of the modern and contemporary eras, including Constantin Brancusi, René Magritte, Banksy, and Damien Hirst.

London Asia Week brings a standout selection of 20th century paintings by renowned Chinese artists. Ahead of the sale, Lazarus Halstead, Head of Chinese and Asian Art at Bonhams London, shares his personal pick.

“The traditions of Chinese paintings were transformed throughout the 20th century in exciting and radical ways. This ranged from engaging with Western academic painting techniques to boldly expressive and impressionistic styles.”

“This painting, 'A Seated Lady in Red' by Yang Feiyun (b.1954), was acquired directly from the artist in 1990. Yang is one of the leading figures of contemporary Chinese academic realism, shaping a new generation of Chinese realist painters.”

“Drawing inspiration from both Western academic traditions and Chinese aesthetic sensibilities, Yang's paintings are noted for their serenity, technical precision, and contemplative mood. He served as Dean of the Chinese Academy of Oil Painting under the Chinese National Academy of Arts, and his works are widely exhibited and collected internationally.”

Journey through centuries of a sacred mastery: from a 12th-century Khasarpana Lokeshvara, embodying Tibetan devotion in grand bronze casts for monasteries, to a 14th-century Tibetan sculpture of Shadakshari Lokeshvara. Standing over half a meter tall, this rare and powerful masterpiece is a hallmark of the early Tibetan pantheon.

Witness the rare elegance of a standing Maitreya and the lifelike spirit of Konchok Phel, the 16th – century master and seventh abbot of Ngor Monastery.

How did Imperial China see the world in the 18th Century?

This album of tributary peoples (Zhigong Tu) offers a fascinating glimpse into how the Qing imperial elites understood other cultures and their own place in the world.

Ahead of the upcoming auction in London, we take a closer look at this rare artwork with our Chinese Art Specialist Chen Xie.

“In 1751 the Qianlong Emperor commissioned one of the most ambitious projects of his reign, The Qing Imperial Illustrations of Tributary Peoples, depicting ethnic minorities and foreigners. Today, only four hand-illustrated sets from the Qianlong period are known to exist.”

“Notably, the album offered by Bonhams may represent one of the earliest versions produced in preparation of this monumental work.”
