Who should lead the United Nations for the next decade?

This week I attended 's event "The Leader the World Needs: Appointing the Next UN Secretary-General" where civil society were able to ask the candidates questions. I asked Rafael Grossi:

"Given the rapidly changing global environment, including shifting funding streams and the growing influence of major donors, how will you safeguard the integrity and independence of the UN so it continues to serve all nations rather than the interests of the most powerful actors, or contributors, and this also relates to conflicting agendas that these actors may have, vs the United Nations"

The response can be seen in this carousel. As the UN approaches its 80th anniversary, the next Secretary-General will inherit an organisation facing significant challenges, and changes within the world.

My biggest takeaway? Reform matters, but so does protecting the core principles the UN was created to uphold. Hoping the next SG will create transparency, accountability, and overall compliance in the core principles, is the only way to ensure the UN can survive.

What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the next UN Secretary-General?

Final day of . The US Resolution proposed an amendment of that was agreed in 1995. The amendment was entitled "Protection of women and girls through appropriate terminology".

The key aspects of the original draft states, highlights "appropriately applied by countries", providing agency to the national government and their potential shifts of opinion. If this amendment would pass it would create a strict ruling limiting this same agency and flexibility.

The language of gender varies with meaning in each country, from cultural nuances, practices, and sometimes restriction in language.

The resolution would also create a dangerous precedent for any future resolution that could define or redefine other terminologies without intergovernmental agreement.

Not to mention, this age old argument of needed to define a person.

Little more tired but invigorated!

The Amendments proposed for the UN Resolution mainly focuses on the removal of the word "Gender", which was confirmed in 1995, to be replaced with only men and women, according to biological s*x.

The layered implications covers gendered based violence, nuanced language used globally for countries that do not hold wording in the same way, and to also cover areas such as inters*x, a biological non binary group.
