Continuing our International Women's Day Week Long celebration:

The economic potential of female-led startups
The African Development Bank (AfDB) has asserted that female led startups are key drivers of economic development and contribute to financial integration in the continent through job creation. As such, African governments can boost economic growth and lift millions out of poverty by unleashing the potential of women entrepreneurs, as stated by the World Bank, transforming the continent with the right policies and interventions.

Harvard research also shows that increasing the rate of female-owned businesses and reducing gender gaps in Africa are growth enhancing. Meanwhile, a study from management consultancy Roland Berger notes that women entrepreneurs contribute between $250 billion and $300 billion to African economic growth, equivalent to about 13% of the continent’s GDP.

Even on a global scale, the female economy is considered the world’s largest emerging market, which has the potential to contribute $12 trillion to global GDP by 2025. Moreover, female entrepreneurs create employment opportunities for themselves and others and drive community development and improved living conditions on the continent. By introducing new products to the African start-up economy, female founders boost productivity and create competition in male-dominated markets.

The New Humanitarian writes:
Ten African countries are scheduled to organise presidential elections in 2023 in contests that will both shape and be shaped by humanitarian crises.
These countries include the Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Sudan, and Zimbabwe. An election will also occur in Somaliland, the de facto state still treated in official diplomatic circles as part of Somalia. In total, these countries represent about a third of the continent’s population.
With only a few exceptions, the polls will take place in the shadow of conflict and unrest. The underlying causes of these emergencies do not lend themselves to quick fixes. Yet credible elections can help strengthen the legitimacy of the state to deal with the difficulties of the challenges ahead.
As such, politicians, citizens, and communities across Africa must take responsibility for ensuring that the polls are conducted successfully. Failure to do so will likely see deeper uncertainty and more intense violence.

Happy World Wildlife Day

On days like today, we celebrate nature and call to protect it.

Biodiversity is our planet’s wealth. It is a cornerstone of development, and its loss threatens many hard-won development gains. For instance, the loss of forests means the loss of carbon sinks, further accelerating climate change. The Amazon used to sink 5 percent of annual carbon emissions, but that is no longer the case. In the first six months of 2022 alone, 1,500 square miles of Amazon forest – an area more than twice the size of Beijing - was destroyed. Further, 40 percent of all conflict is caused, made worse, or financed by natural resources.

Biodiversity blunts the impact of other crises, like climate change and conflict, on development; it is also the wealth of poor nations and poor communities within nations as a producer of jobs and GDP. Take the fisheries sector, where 60 million jobs globally are tied directly to fishing and fish farming. For every one of those jobs, 2.5 more are created in the fisheries value chain. That is 200 million jobs, 60 percent of which are in the developing world. The same can be said for industries such as forestry and nature-based tourism.

We cannot ignore that nature and biodiversity loss is a material risk to our economies, our financial sector and therefore to development (World Bank, 2022)
