What comes to your mind when you hear of the concept "organisational culture?"
Today, I want to share a story that underscores a critical issue affecting workplaces globally - the impact of leadership behaviour on organisational culture and performance.
Recently, one of my coachees opened up about their experience with a supervisor whose approach to addressing performance concerns was less than ideal. Instead of fostering a supportive environment, this leader chose to address performance issues in public, causing significant distress and discomfort.
🛑 Here are 5 adverse effects of public critique of an employee's performance;
1️⃣ Demoralising and counterproductive,
2️⃣ Undermines the individuals confidence,
3️⃣ Sets a tone of negativity that ripples through the team,
4️⃣ Focuses on blame rather than growth,
5️⃣ Hinders the potential for constructive dialogue & inprovement.
💥The cultural dilemma is this story isn't an isolated incident. Many of us continue to experience disrespectful behaviour from our leaders. This builds castles of toxic culture, fostering conflict, eroding trust and in some cases leading to low retention - especially at a senior leadership level.
💡It's crucial to recognise that this isn't just a problem for individuals; it's a persuasive cultural issue that impacts organisational performance as a whole. Effective leadership is about;
🌸 Empowering individuals and fostering growth,
🌸 Championing open communication & constructive feedback,
🌸Building a positive organisational culture where mistakes are viewed as opportunities for learning & inprovement.
As we navigate the ever changing landscape of the workplace, dare to have conversations - advocating for leadership practices that inspire your teams rather than deflate.
Invite me to facilitate these daring but possible conversations.
Yours truly,
