What Happens When a Pope Dies?

When a Pope dies, a structured and ceremonial process begins—centuries old but still very much alive. It starts with the official confirmation of the pope’s passing by the Camerlengo, a senior Vatican figure tasked with overseeing this transition. The pope’s personal symbols of authority—his ring and seal—are immediately destroyed to prevent any misuse.

The Vatican then enters a nine-day mourning period (novemdiales), during which the pope’s body lies in state inside St. Peter’s Basilica. People from around the world are welcomed to pay their final respects. The funeral is held at St. Peter’s Square and is attended by heads of state, religious leaders, and hundreds of thousands of pilgrims. Travel and access to central Rome may be significantly restricted during this time.

After the funeral, the election of a new pope begins through a process called the Conclave, where cardinals gather in the Sistine Chapel to vote in secrecy until a new leader of the Church is chosen. The process concludes with the historic announcement from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica: “We have a Pope.”

Pope Francis has modernized some of these traditions, making it clear that only one pope should serve at a time and signaling that further updates to these rituals may continue under future leadership.

Summary Calendar of Events (Dates to Be Confirmed)

Day 1 – Official announcement of the pope’s death. Vatican bells toll. Papal residence sealed.

Days 2–3 – Preparation of the body and private prayers.

Days 4–6 – Public viewing in St. Peter’s Basilica begins. Large crowds expected.

Day 7 or 8 – State funeral in St. Peter’s Square. Potential traffic closures and heightened security across Rome.

Day 9 – Final day of mourning. Pope is laid to rest beneath the basilica.

Following Days – Cardinals convene in Rome to begin the Conclave.

Within Two Weeks – New pope is elected and presented to the world.
