People living with dementia don't just experience memory changes; they can also find it difficult to judge depth, recognise objects or safely navigate familiar spaces.

A few simple adjustments around the home can make a real difference:

🏡 Keep your walkways clear of clutter.
💡 Make sure rooms, hallways and stairs are well lit.
🟦 Use contrasting colours to help important objects stand out, such as toilet seats, grab rails or plate edges.
🪑 Choose sturdy furniture that provides good support.
🧹 Remove loose rugs, trailing wires and other trip hazards.
🚶 Encourage regular gentle exercise to maintain your strength and balance.

Small changes can help improve your confidence, reduce the risk of falls, and support independence.

Many people think dementia is simply about memory loss, but it affects much more than that. It can change the way your brain processes information, making it harder to judge distances, recognise objects, plan movements and move around safely.

These changes can significantly increase the risk of falls. In fact, around 80% of people living with dementia will experience a fall each year, with many suffering repeat falls.

At Fairhand Visiting Physiotherapists, we help you maintain your mobility, strength, balance and confidence in the comfort of your own home.

Physiotherapy can help by:
✔ Improving your balance and muscle strength
✔ Encouraging safe movement around the home
✔ Providing practical advice for families and carers
✔ Reducing the risk of falls
✔ Helping you remain independent for as long as possible

Every person is different, and small changes can make a big difference to everyday life.

If you're worried about a loved one's mobility or recent falls, remember...

As we age, keeping our muscles strong becomes increasingly important. Stronger muscles help support your bones, improve balance, and reduce the risk of falls.

You don't need intense workouts to see benefits. Simple exercises tailored to your ability can make a real difference.

Ask yourself:
✔️ Are you doing any strength exercises each week?
✔️ Do you feel confident getting up from a chair?
✔️ Is your balance as good as it used to be?

If not, physiotherapy can help you build strength safely and confidently.

What does a first physiotherapy visit look like? 🏡

We know having someone new come into your home can feel like a big step, so we always aim to make your first visit as comfortable and relaxed as possible.

We’ll start with a friendly chat to get to know you — talking about what’s been going on and your medical history. You’re always welcome to have a family member with you if that makes you feel more at ease.

We may ask you to show us how you walk or move, so we can understand what’s causing any discomfort. We’ll explain things clearly as we go, so you always know what we’re doing and why.
From this, we’ll begin your treatment straight away and work together to create a plan that suits you and your goals. If helpful, we can also provide and show you how to use any equipment or walking aids at home.

Your first session lasts around 45 minutes and is all about helping you feel comfortable, supported, and confident in your own home.

If you have any questions before your visit, feel free to get in touch 💬
