You Don’t Have a System....

Most small businesses don’t have a safety system.

They have:

a policy
a template
something downloaded and forgotten

That’s not a system. That’s paperwork.

A system works under pressure.

If you’re not sure yours would, message SAFE

Most staff training is a paper exercise.

You don’t have a training problem.
You have a "competence problem".

Courses get ticked off.
Shadow shifts get signed off.
Everyone feels reassured.

Until something goes wrong.

Because:
Training ≠ understanding
Understanding ≠ safe practice
And confidence definitely ≠ competence

CQC don’t ask what training you delivered.
They ask if your staff can do the job "safely, consistently, without help"

If you can’t prove that, you’re exposed.

The gap is simple:
No clear link between training → assessment → working alone

That’s where most providers fail. Quietly. Repeatedly.

If you’ve got staff working alone and you’re not 100% sure they should be,

The Damage Starts Before the Crisis Does

Work stress does not always show up as a crisis first.

Often it looks like this:

you cannot switch off properly
conversations keep running in your head
your role feels heavier than it should
you are carrying too much, quietly
you know something needs to change, but you are not clear what

That is why generic wellbeing advice often falls flat.

People do not always need more awareness.
Sometimes they need space to get clear on what is actually draining them and what needs to change first.

Do you think most people get support early enough, or only once they are already running on empty?

The Real Warning Sign? You Cannot Switch Off.

A lot of people do not realise work stress has been building until work starts following them home.

They are still doing the job.
Still replying.
Still showing up.

But they are also:
• replaying conversations after hours
• carrying tension into the evening
• struggling to switch off properly
• feeling heavier than they look

From the outside, it can look like coping.

But that does not mean it is sustainable.

What is usually the first sign that work stress is no longer staying at work?

If you run or manage a care service in the UK, this is worth being aware of.

The Health and Safety Executive has opened a consultation on proposed changes to RIDDOR (the rules for reporting workplace incidents).

It’s open until 30 June 2026

In care settings, where staff are supporting people every day, these changes could affect how you recognise and report both injuries and work-related health issues.

Here’s what’s being proposed:

• Clearer definitions
Less confusion around what counts as “work-related” especially important in complex care environments

• Updated list of work-related illnesses
This could better reflect issues like stress, musculoskeletal injuries, and long-term health concerns in care roles

• More professionals able to diagnose
Not just doctors but other registered health professionals may be able to confirm reportable conditions

• Changes to serious incident categories
Updating what needs to be reported to reflect real risks in today’s workplaces

• Simpler reporting process
Making it easier to get reporting right and reduce missed or unnecessary reports

From a health, safety and wellbeing point of view, this matters in care.

Because when reporting is unclear, risks can be missed.
And when risks are missed, it affects both staff wellbeing and quality of care.

This consultation is open to everyone including care providers of all sizes.

💬 I’d be interested to hear from those working in care:

Where do you find RIDDOR reporting most unclear or challenging in your setting?
