Google would have you believe there is no need to build backlinks.

Backlinks Have A Terrible Name.
Backlink building is the brown paper bag of SEO. It is the black hat, insidious and underhand way of fooling Google into ranking a website.

Pre-hummingbird (one of Google’s updates) backlinks were all the rage. It was absurd. All you had to do was build as exact match anchor text as possible from as many websites as possible, and you would rank #1 in Google for your keywords.

The major problem was that Google could not get anyone selling back to admit that’s what they were doing. However, they devised a cunning way of ensuring that the people who did buy backlinks not only admitted it created a list of backlinks they had bought.

If it suspected foul play, Google did this by dropping a website from its index. It then sent the Webmaster or owner an email saying you have a Google penalty for unnatural backlinks to your website.

New or old website

The reality is often how old the website is and how long the website has been functioning in its current state and under its current ownership. Most websites rank somewhere for their core keywords. It might be on page 5 or 6 of Google.

Just reading on Google and listening to what new clients have been told by their old SEO company, there is a common misconception that SEO takes anything from 12 weeks to 12 months to have any impact.

Myths
It will take three-six months to see any results. “It typically takes between 3–6 months for SEO to show results. That’s according to the ~4,300 people who responded to our LinkedIn and Twitter poll.” See here.

For all new clients, we create a simple strategy that outlines what is expected from both parties, who to report to and what is important to emphasise.

The length and scope of the plan depends on the size of the business or the complexity of the SEO work.

Stage 1

Discover the website’s current positions in Google.
Discover which products/services the business wants to focus on.
List branding rules, voice and company USPs to include.
Discuss strategies and options moving forward.
Start to research all possible keywords and list them in priority. (Ongoing process).
Create backlink profiles for client and competitors
Create a list of words used in the client’s website and compare to the language used in competitors’ websites.
