What a result! but rather than go on about winning awards (which by the way we are very happy about) I think it’s more important to acknowledge the over used word “Collaboration”. Everyone seems to be collaborating with everyone these days, but most of it is based on positioning/alignment or elevating a product or brand.
We began designing VAULT with very little experience in lighting or manufacturing, but with a clear idea of a problem that we felt needed solving. It’s very easy as designers to get carried away with the design process and forget about the business side of it. Something we do a lot! It’s also very easy to get an idea to a point where it’s market ready only to shelve it because you have no clear route to market!
We all enjoy the thrill of the chase, but ploughing loads of studio time into a project where there is no defined outcome is a real gamble. This is where I believe true collaboration works. Sharing ideas with others can have its risks, but in our experience not sharing it is a far riskier strategy.
We met Atelje Lyktan 4 years ago with a concept that we truly believed in. Fortunately they did too and drove us to make it even better. Their help and expertise turned a great concept in to a great (award winning, did I mention that?) product.
This whole journey has taught us a massive amount, and although becoming your own client is not the easiest way of working it has certainly created some new and exciting opportunities.
