- From London Council of Mosques -
Dear Mayor Sadiq Khan,
We are representing Muslim communities from across London.
We are writing in regards to the lighting up of City Hall in the colours of the Israeli flag.
We believe that Greater London Authority should stop lighting up City Hall in colours of the Israeli flag as it is deeply unjust in the wider context and it is causing increased local tensions in our city.
Lighting up public buildings in the colours of the occupying Israeli state who have killed thousands of Palestinians and broken countless international laws sends a deeply troubling message to the communities of London and the world.
As stakeholders in Muslim communities, the events that have occurred in Palestine have caused much grief and anguish amongst our congregations and service users. We condemn the civilian loss of lives of both Palestinians and Israelis, this cycle of violence must stop.
We have exercised our duty as leaders and role models in Muslim communities and have asked people to show restraint, directing people towards positive activities of prayers, raising awareness of the situation and giving financial aid to those who need medical treatment in Palestine.
We would like Greater London Authority to support us in such messaging.
Best regards,
London Council of Mosques
