Have you heard of the book "I May Be Wrong" by Bjorn Natthiko Lindeblad? It's not exactly a leadership book, but hear me out, this book might just be the breath of fresh air that leaders need in the age of AI and the VUCA era.

Lindeblad's book is a captivating dive into the world of Buddhist monks and their pursuit of enlightenment. Although it may seem unrelated to the world of business, the lessons in it are more pertinent than ever. My biggest takeaway from the book is that admitting "I may be wrong" is a critical trait for everyone, including leaders!

So how can leaders cultivate the humility to admit they may be wrong, while still maintaining the determination and drive necessary to succeed? Well, it's not easy, folks. You have to walk a fine line between being a pushover and being a know-it-all. And let's face it, most leaders struggle with that balance.

First, we need to cultivate self-awareness. That means recognizing our own strengths and weaknesses, and being honest with ourselves about where we need help. It's like looking in a funhouse mirror, except instead of making our heads look big, it makes our ego shrink.

But here's the thing - sometimes we think we're listening, but we're actually just selectively hearing what we want to hear. In the workplace, this type of behavior is all too common. Leaders will nod their heads and say they're listening, but in reality, they're only selecting the information that fits their agenda. It's like a manager who hears their employee's concerns about long hours, but only responds by saying, "Well, we need to hit our targets. But I will take into account your concerns." And then do nothing.

But let's be real, who needs fairy tales when you've got real-world examples of people rushing to find quick fixes and paying the price? That's where design thinking comes in, the magical tool that can help you tackle any problem with ease. Inspired by the four-phase model developed by Stanford University's Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, let's see how the third pig could have used design thinking to build a more robust and sustainable house:

1. Empathize: The third pig put himself in the shoes of his potential end-users (in this case, himself and his pig brothers) and tried to understand their needs and concerns. He recognized that the house needed to be strong enough to withstand the wolf's huffing and puffing.

2. Define: Based on his empathy work, the third pig defined the problem he was trying to solve: how to build a house that is strong enough to withstand the wolf's attacks.

3. Ideate: The third pig brainstormed a range of potential solutions to the defined problem. He considered using various materials and building techniques to make the house stronger and more durable.

1. Ask and learn - have genuine curiosity

On his journey, the Little Prince met a wise old fox who taught him the art of taming. The key to taming is taking the time to build a relationship based on genuine curiosity and interest in the other person. In the corporate jungle, it can be easy to fall into the trap of fake curiosity, where you ask questions simply as a polite gesture or to check a box. But true curiosity involves a genuine desire to learn and understand the diverse perspectives of those around you.

2. Walk in their shoes – show empathy

Remember the Little Prince encountered a dangerous snake who threatened to bite him?
