🌍 Big News: EU Launches First Carbon Removal Certification! 🌱
The European Union has announced the introduction of the world's first Carbon Removal Certification Framework on February 20, 2024. This development is part of the EU's efforts to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, recognizing the importance of carbon removal and soil emission reduction activities.
🌊 Inclusion of Marine Carbon Removal
For the first time, activities related to marine carbon removal, including those undertaken by the aquaculture sector, are eligible for voluntary certification. This move acknowledges the role of marine ecosystems, such as seagrass meadows, in carbon sequestration.
🌿 Categories for Carbon Farming and Soil Emission Reduction
The framework identifies four categories for eligible activities, focusing on both permanent and temporary carbon storage, as well as soil emission reduction through carbon farming. This categorization aims to encourage a variety of carbon removal practices across the EU.
📈 Framework and Certification Process
The certification process is voluntary and will follow a set of criteria including quantification, additionality, long-term storage, and sustainability. The European Commission plans to develop specific methodologies for certifying different types of carbon removal activities. Additionally, an EU-wide public registry will be established to enhance transparency.
