Contrary to popular belief, a strong mind is not defined by the absence of fear, but the control of it.

When we think of the qualities of a good friend, we speak of loyalty, honesty and care. Someone who looks out for us. Then is fear not our best friend? It is fear that stops us from putting our hand in the fire, going down that dark alley, jumping off the cliff. Fear is the voice that alerts us when we are being lazy or procrastinating. It helps us to avoid and anticipate dangers. Especially with strong self-awareness and intuition, fear calls on players at the right time.

We all experience fear, it is a question of what we fear that changes, as well as how we respond to it. Fear should be expected in relation to goals, given that we should be aiming for a somewhat unreasonable challenge - something just out of reach. Therefore, we must harness the power of fear rather than letting it damage us. How do we gain the advantages without succumbing to the negatives?

• Discipline and control of fear - dealing with fear gives experience, and cumulative experience is what allows us to make the best decisions. Notice the feeling and face up to it all the same. Over time what is previously feared becomes less impactful.

• Logically reframe anxieties - change perspective on a given situation towards rational optimism (self-confidence defined by disciplined action). When we have a clear understanding of what needs to be done to perform well or win, destructive fear disappears.

• Motion relieves tension - fear gets the better of us when we sit still. If there is no action promoting success, fear of failure is inevitable. Spending a little less time in our thoughts versus working away at a related task is useful.

• Relaxation is necessary - we perform at our best when focused and engaged, but in that state of flow. A calm mind is a logical mind - aware of everything that is going on around, anticipation sharp. That only happens when we relax. An agitated mind will focus on its fears and not find the state of flow easily.

The triple threat is a powerful position for forwards, offering the ability to pose danger to the opposition by receiving the ball either in front, in line, or in behind the defence. By simply adopting this position, it becomes incredibly difficult for defenders to contend with all three threats, as it is so easy to adjust and respond to whatever the defence shows.

This position is found by peeling onto the blindside of a marker and positioning in the gap between that defender and the next player in their line. Once there, the first aim is to break in behind the line, typically by timing a late run to latch onto a threaded pass through the gaps in the defence. When a strong defensive shape closes off this option, the second threat becomes more relevant - receiving the ball to feet in the exact same position. This often opens up naturally when defenders overcompensate to prevent the threat in behind. Upon receiving, the forward can either drive through the gap into space or take on a last defender 1v1. If neither of these opportunities are present, the third threat involves dropping slightly into the pocket of space in front of the defensive line. From this position, it is then possible to get a shot off or even play the final ball for someone else.

Erling Haaland successfully leveraging all three threats at different moments during a match against Chelsea last season. He consistently found the blindside of his marker and waited in the gap on the last line. In the clips, we see an example of each threat posed resulting in a shot, with one ultimately leading to a goal. Haaland’s ability to remain patient and find this position showcased the devastating potential of the triple threat when executed correctly.

Prehab, short for “preventative rehabilitation,” is a proactive approach to injury prevention that focuses on strengthening the body, addressing imbalances and preparing for the physical demands of football. Unlike rehab, which deals with recovery after injury, prehab aims to stop injuries before they happen. It is vital for footballers at all levels, helping to avoid both common issues and the more serious injuries that can derail careers.

Prehab is particularly important for addressing chronic injuries - nagging problems like tendinopathies, groin strains, or lower back pain that often arise from repetitive stresses or imbalances. By targeting stabilising muscles, improving mobility and correcting movement patterns, prehab ensures that chronic issues are minimised. Consistency in these areas keeps players healthier and more reliable on the pitch over time.

At the same time, prehab plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of major injuries like ACL tears, which often seem sudden but may result from underlying weaknesses or poor movement mechanics. Exercises that strengthen key areas such as the hamstrings, glutes and core can provide the stability and control needed to protect vulnerable joints during the explosive movements and collisions that define football.

Incorporating prehab into your routine is about more than injury prevention… it is about creating a foundation for peak performance and longevity. By focusing on chronic injury management and building resilience against major injuries, you ensure that your body remains capable of meeting the demands of the game, season after season. Prehab is not just for when you feel vulnerable; it is an essential practice for any player looking to stay available, consistent and effective over the long term.
