Last week was International Women's Day, yesterday was Mother's Day, and March is Women's History Month. It's an important time to reflect on how much society has evolved for women of our time, and in recognition of this, we produced an article exploring the role of femininity throughout art history.
Female artists have historically been repressed from expressing themselves creatively, shackled by the expectation to conform to social and domestic duties, and not offered the freedom to develop individualism.
Rather, women have played an integral role to the aestheticism of female ideals, and with it, one inescapable, and ultimately unconscionable truth stands out: the ideals women are asked to embody, regardless of culture or continent, have been repeatedly visualised almost exclusively by men.
As Mary Shelley said: "I do not wish women to have power over men; but over themselves..."
As a subject, women have played an integral role to the aestheticism of female ideals. History provides us with a record of the portrayal of women.
