He likes to think what he has achieved until now owes much to the man who decided, when he plunged into those icy Atlantic waters, that he would die another day; another 68 years later, as it turned out. “You have to understand my father to understand, in a way, my career, because so much of what I’ve done has been steered by a bloody-minded determination,” Coe says. “After what happened to him in the war, he also regarded every day as a bonus. Everything he did with me, not least as my coach, was predicated on the view that, ‘I really don’t give a f*** what anyone else says.’ ”
