Careers don’t always follow a straight path.

When Albin John Mundaplackal joined Mott MacDonald, he started out as a highway engineer. Through curiosity and a willingness to say yes to new opportunities, he found his way into aviation engineering – a move that brought the scale, complexity and global impact he was looking for.

Today, Albin works across airport and airfield design, from runways and taxiways to passenger experience and terminal flow, collaborating with teams and clients around the world. His story shows how stepping outside your comfort zone can open doors you didn’t know existed.

Protecting coastal environments takes purpose, collaboration and courage in the field.

In Singapore, our principal environmental consultant Jacqueline Tham leads environmental and social initiatives that support sustainable development across energy, water, buildings and transport. With a background in marine biology, Jacqueline specialises in environmental impact assessments for marine and aquatic environments, helping projects navigate complex regulatory, permitting and compliance requirements.

She is currently working on a first-of-its-kind biodiversity relocation project in Singapore, balancing early morning intertidal fieldwork with rigorous safety planning, risk management and close collaboration with clients, regulators and multidisciplinary teams. For Jacqueline, excellence means staying curious, prioritising safety and creating a team culture where people feel trusted, supported and empowered to do their best work.

We were thrilled to win at the BSI UK Standards Users Awards. 🏆
The Environmental Impact award recognised how we apply PAS 2080 across our business. This is the standard for managing whole-life carbon for buildings and infrastructure.

The award win recognises the role that our PAS 2080 leadership has played in the environmental outcomes we help clients to achieve. Having contributed to its development, we're proud to have been commended for its successful, long-term application – how we think, design and deliver and achieve a tangible shift forward in effective carbon management.

👏 Congratulations to all the winners and nominees and thank you to the British Standards Institute.

We were proud to be named Aviation Consultant of the Year at the New Civil Engineer (NCE) Airports Awards.

This is a brilliant recognition of our people and the airport clients and partners we work alongside across the globe.

The award recognises our industry‑leading work on major programmes worldwide, across major global airports like Changi (Singapore), JFK (New York), Auckland (New Zealand) and Heathrow (UK), combining design excellence with carbon cutting innovation and delivery confidence.

Thank you to everyone who made this possible. On to the next challenge!

When Mott MacDonald Fellow and regional geotechnics leader Nicholas Mace moved to Singapore over twenty years ago he embarked on a journey that has seen him design some of the country's most important underground infrastructure.

"I get real satisfaction from the projects that I have been involved with because I get to use them. I regularly go through the road tunnels, and the metro tunnels," he says.

Starting with the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway, Nick has developed deep geotechnical expertise and worked on a wide range of structures throughout Southeast Asia, including Singapore's metro, Changi Airport's new terminal building and the North-South Corridor project.

In this video Nick talks about the challenging world of underground construction and his passion for developing shared understanding and supporting the next generation of technical leaders.

Discover his career journey from winning structural engineering awards and undertaking a geotechnical engineering PhD in the US to leading some of the most challenging underground projects in the world. 👇

The mental health crisis in the construction industry is complex and cannot be tackled in isolation.

Our group safety manager, Laura Hague, recently spoke with New Civil Engineer ahead of World Day of Safety and Health at Work about why mental health must be treated as a core part of health and safety practices. She says it should be embedded at both team and project level to help prevent issues arising in the first place.

As Laura explains, “we see a lot of unplanned change requiring quick reaction, which creates pressure. We need better communication, openness and honesty”.

Collaboration across the industry is essential if we’re to make meaningful progress. That’s why it’s encouraging to see perspectives from Balfour Beatty head of health, Robert Cheeseman, Civil Engineering Contractors Association civil engineering manager Kate Lloyd and EKFB head of occupational health Alison Crawley. They reflect on where current practices are falling short and where we need to go next to ensure mental health support is a “sustained effort, not a one-off conversation”.

Which leadership actions set the pace when shaping a positive workplace environment?

This World Day for Safety and Health at Work, we’re reflecting on leadership behaviours and how they influence health, safety and wellbeing.

By supporting leaders to advocate for their colleagues, we’re making progress towards achieving zero harm and providing practical support when colleagues need it most.

In practice, this involves a collaborative approach across people managers, HR and our global safety and wellbeing teams to improve how wellbeing risks are identified and managed.

This thinking extends to our work with industry partners and led to the launch of 'Managing wellbeing risks – a guide for the engineering consultancy sector' with International SOS and the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) to support the health, safety and wellbeing of industry professionals throughout a project’s life cycle.
