It’s and Leanne Walker, our young person consultant and expert by experience in our CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) team is on her way to a reception at Buckingham Palace! 😀

Leanne has been invited to meet Princes William and Harry, and the Duchess of Cambridge, in recognition of her work in the sector. You can read more about Leanne’s work here: https://www.england.nhs.uk/mids-east/2017/10/06/a-royal-appointment-for-young-derbyshire-mental-health-worker/

We asked Leanne a few questions about her special day…

Q. Where were you when you received the invitation?

A. I was sat outside Kingsway Hospital in Derby in a colleague’s car, having collected the envelope from Trust HQ. I just sat holding it, looking at the Buckingham Palace stamp and my colleagues were like, ‘Open it! Open it!’ I peeled it open and took it out and I just saw the words ‘invite’ and ‘Buckingham Palace’ alongside my name and I just couldn’t believe it. I do what I do because I want to play my part in helping to improve things for others. I continue to tell my ‘story’ because I want others to know it’s OK to tell theirs too, that they are not alone. I don’t do what I do for recognition but in that moment, I felt proud.

Q. Do you know who nominated you to attend the Palace and why?

A. Since being a service user at Derby CAMHS, I’ve worked with a range of different organisations, so I don’t know exactly. But I did do some work with NHS England a few years back, which is a possibility. Whoever made this happen, thank you!

Q. Mental health has recently become an issue closely associated with Princes William and Harry and the Duchess of Cambridge. Do you have anything you want to say to them?

A. Thank you for giving mental health an even bigger platform. Having you on board brings an extra ray of hope for the future. Together, we really can make change happen.

Q. Thinking back about when you were receiving support from the team – what's the best piece of advice you would give to others today?

A. It can be hard, when you are in the middle of a very difficult time, to see your life being anything other than what it is in that moment. But believe me, things can improve; life will not always be what it is now.

Q. What a way to celebrate World Mental Health Day! What are you looking forward to most at the reception?

A. It will be great to talk to other people and hear about the work they are doing. I enjoy learning from others and listening to their ‘stories’ and of course I am very much looking forward to hearing from The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. Honestly though, it really won’t feel real until I am stepping through the gates!

Visitors to London love Covent Garden. There are good shops and restaurants, but what people enjoy the most are the markets and the street theatre that goes on around the markets.

The Apple Market is found in the North Hall of the Marketing Building and sells British made crafts, jewellery, leather goods and more. You will always find a range of curios every day of the week.
Open every day of the week, the East Colonnade Market has a variety of stalls selling products such as handmade soap, jewellery, handbags, hand-knitted children's clothing, a magician's stall, sweets, artwork and homeware.
In the South Piazza, the Jubilee Market changes its wares daily. On Mondays, the market is dedicated to antiques. From Tuesday to Friday, a general market operates with traders selling clothes and household goods. At weekends, the market offers arts and crafts.

There are three markets located in Covent Garden’s 19th century Piazza, each offering a wide range of craft, gifts and more.

Hello :)
We’ve been very busy organising the event on 12 April! We’re thinking of making it interactive, having pizza to eat and fizzy drinks! We’ve decided to avoid presentations and to make the day as fun as we can, while also gathering thoughts, feelings and values.

On the day there will be a selfie competition for the silliest /most creative photo but there will be no pressure to take part! We’re going to have a corner with hats and props and things!

Often conferences and events can be quite formal but we are going with a ‘wear whatever you feel comfy in’ approach’ – if that’s pyjamas then fine by us!

On the day we very much want to hear what you as young people have to say! There will be no pressure though and no idea will be too small or too big. You can expect a few activities such as working in groups on a big sheet of paper, with marker pens to gather your ideas. All the sessions will be chaired or led by young people.

We will be using social media throughout the day but we won’t take your photo unless you have agreed to this by signing a consent form.

Anyway, we’re very much looking forward to the day and seeing you there!
