“Gaslighting” is a term widely used to define manipulating someone into thinking they are wrong even when they are right (usually in relationships).

But have you heard of racial gaslighting? 🙅🏽

It works the same way, but victims are made to question their own judgement on the issues of racism. For example: when a person of colour tells you that systemic racism exists, and someone else denies it, that is racial gaslighting.

Navigating the constant questioning and undermining of what you believe is true can become exhausting, becoming a form of psychological abuse that has an impact on mental health.

Have you been a victim of racial gaslighting? 🙋🏾‍♀️

Employers should be valuing everyone for their differences, hence the importance of supporting and promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Having an effective D&I strategy in place is proven to add value to an organisation and contribute to employee wellbeing and engagement.

But do you understand difference between diversity and inclusion?

🧡 DIVERSITY is about recognising the benefits that different perspectives can bring to decision making, with the workforce reflecting the organisation’s customers.

🧡 INCLUSION refers to valuing differences and providing a comfortable environment with a sense of belonging where all contributions are respected, no matter the background of the person.

BAME (Black, Asian and minority ethnicities) has long been a contested phrase with diverse groups believing it doesn’t signify their varied identities and experiences.

According to a Blueprint for All survey, 55% of young people said they felt uncomfortable with the term BAME, 52% with BME and 59% with “dual heritage”. This opens the debate to find and identify a new unifying signifier as a replacement, with BAME no longer appropriate to use.

What are your thoughts on the term BAME? Do you find it offensive or outdated? 🤔

Universities are facing racial bias in academic research, resulting in a loss of talent due to the under-representation of minority students 🎓

It’s an area that needs immediate attention and UK Research and Innovation are working hard to do just that. With funded projects to encourage black, Asian and other ethnic minority students to continue studying after university, the initiative focuses on supporting academics by providing more training and mentoring.

We’ll all see benefit from ethnic diversity in research, so why is it still posing a problem?

But what’s changed for this to be the case?

How do you know if your business is guilty of ? 🤔

Ask yourself this question 👇

❓ Is there a purpose beyond the intention to make my audience believe that my brand is ‘moral’? What is it? ❓

If the answer is “No”, you’re virtue signalling!

So, how can you avoid it? 🙅🏽‍♂️

Easy, try to ensure your communications have another purpose. For example, if you are raising money for a charitable cause, make sure the call to action of your communication is to donate. That way, your communication has the purpose of raising more money, not just letting people know what you’re doing something good.

With Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) reporting just 15% women and 6% BAME and disabled workers in the industry, change is long overdue.
