🤔 Do you add the occasional joke to your work emails? 🤔

As I wrote last week, we’re not great at deciphering intent over email. And we’re not great at conveying it either.

So, jokes over email can be risky.

Here’s how to get it right šŸ‘‡

Here’s a short story my client told me last week, all about the importance of commas (and intent)…and why we’re much stupider at emailing than wot we fink.

Are your emails too professional? 🧐

The phrase ā€˜email etiquette’ assumes all we need to do is follow a set of precise rules to become the perfect emailer.

ā€˜Keep your tone professional’, the email etiquette articles cry. ā€˜Never use emojis’ and ā€˜use a formal sign-off.’

But it certainly isn’t the full story, and our emails often end up sounding stuffy, cold and distant.

Here’s why I think being ourselves is just as important as being correct, if we want to build relationships šŸ‘‡

Want to improve your persuasive writing?

šŸ‘‡ This simple sign I see on my way to my co-working office always makes me smile, as it (perhaps unintentionally) uses some great persuasive writing devices:

• Paint a picture: They describe their desired outcome – ā€˜Zen Zone’ – so everyone can agree on a shared future (yes, it’s a bit happy clappy, but at least on brand for a spa)

• Alliteration: repeated ā€˜Z’ sound

• Share the ā€˜how’, not just the ā€˜what’: ā€˜Soft voices, quiet feet’, not just ā€˜Quiet please’

• Sensory language: They appeal to our sense of hearing to make their request more evocative

• Repetition and rhythm: It’s almost poetic with the repetition of two words in the first three lines

• Rule of Three (almost): if you lose the ā€˜please’ you end up with a nice three-line almost-poem using the rule of three (which states that things grouped in threes are easier to digest and remember)

āœļø Try some of these techniques when you next want your reader to DO something.

Let me know how you get on!

Need to tell your audience something important?

Well, you’d better be quick - because according to Dr Gloria Marks, author of the new book ā€˜Attention Span’, you’ve got just 47 seconds before your audience stops paying attention!

Yes, you heard right. 47 seconds.

ā³ļø In 2004 it was 2.5 minutes.
ā³ļø A few years later it was 75 seconds.
āŒ› And now… less than a minute.

So, the next time you’re communicating online, remember the clock is ticking… ā°

Is one of your new year’s resolutions to improve your business comms?

The new year is a great time for a purge in lots of areas, including how you communicate with your audience.

Here’s a great lesson from the army - just remember to C.L.A.P! šŸ‘

PSA: Don’t forget to set your out-of-office reply before going full ā€˜goblin mode’ over the holidays!

If you’re struggling, why not get help…from a horse! 🐓

As part of efforts to highlight Iceland as a travel destination, the country’s wonderfully bonkers tourism office has trained several horses to type out-of-office emails on a giant keyboard. It’s calling the free service ā€œout-horse your email.ā€
